Day 43: Madeleine Scrubland Hunt Ends

Updated: 10:49, Friday June 15, 2007

Police looking for missing girl Madeleine McCann have finished searching an area of scrubland in Portugal where an anonymous letter claimed she was buried. Police vans, one carrying sniffer dogs, had moved in at first light in the village of Arao, not far from Praia da Luz.It is now 43 days since the girl was taken from her bed as she slept in the Algarve resort. Sky News Correspondent Ian Woods, near the search site, said: "We're talking about an area of several square kilometres." The village which was cordoned off lies just north of the main road from Praia da Luz to Faro. Meanwhile Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry McCann have been focusing on finding their daughter alive. Police did not treat the search as a priority yesterday but "with all the media attention the letter had got, they thought they better have a good look", he added. (Sky News)
