Sky News Report; says: A heatwave of record-breaking temperatures has claimed the lives of nearly 500 people in Hungary, health officials have said.The deaths were caused by heatstroke, as well as heart and breathing problems aggravated by extreme temperatures, with parts of Hungary hitting 41.9C.In Budapest, Dr Ferenc Falus, Hungary's chief medical officer, said the heat "contributed to the premature deaths of 230 people, which means 500 extra deaths at the national level".Dr Falus said this figure was lower than expected and significantly below the number of deaths in Mediterranean countries in 2003 and 2006.
The heatwave sweeping much of southern Europe is the second in a month and has caused power blackouts and forest fires across huge areas.
