Secrecy surrounds new Kiwi medical breakthrough

Secrecy shrouds a new metal alloy, developed by Otago and Canterbury scientists, which disappears as it heals fractured bones. Otago University researcher George Dias told The Otago Daily Times patients often needed painful and costly surgery to remove stainless steel and titanium repairs. The alloy was as strong as titanium but its mechanical properties were much closer to that of bone. It could be made to degrade over a time that suited the repair it was used for. Its composition was to stay secret until it was patented, but it was amazing that no one else has come up with such a simple idea. (Yahoo Xtra News)
