"Dirty Water"

Status Quo Live

Out of all the memorable Quo tracks this is the one which is the most evocative with regard to memories of 'High School' days. These days back in the late 70's and early 80's were the best time to be around. All the big name rock bands such as Quo, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow etc were touring and also releasing their now classic albums. Our 'year' at high school was quite unique; our high school was a traditional all boys Grammar school when I started in the first year. We'd gained our right to be there by taking the 11-plus; only to be told a day later the 11-plus had been scrapped it was now to become 'comprehensive'. This changed little for our year ... we had the Grammar teachers and had the 'grammar school education' regardless. The uniqueness to our 'year' was the fact that come the 5th year .... years 1 to 4 had all become 'mixed' both boys & girls. It was the same for the lower 6th and the upper 6th. Our uniqueness was that we remained the last year of all boys. So ... this song 'Dirty Water' although not the BEST Quo song ever ... is the song which always takes me back to my high school days ... where to be part of 'the IN' crowd (and avoid being pulverised by the cock of the year and his cronies) you had to like Status Quo AND you had to further broadcast this fact by emblazoning the logo on your school bag and etch it on your desk! Needless to say I did 'like' Status Quo but ... there were heaps of other bands to be into and to go see live in concert ...... because back then we were all spoilt for choice ....
