New Zealand: Vacated North Shore residents waiting out more rain

North Shore residents evacuated following landslides caused by heavy rain during the week are waiting out another downfall before decisions can be made about returning home.

While some residents have returned following the evacuations on Tuesday, one home has been declared a write off and six others are still being monitored.

North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams said two of the homes affected by a large slip in Torbay appeared safe, but heavy rain this weekend could aggravate it further.

He said this afternoon the slip had not moved in the past 24 hours and provided that didn't change, residents would return.

"They can move back in, but we suggested they wait until the end of the weekend because we're a bit uncertain about what this weather bomb that comes through tonight is going to be like.

"If the slip were to start again we wouldn't want to put them at risk."

Mr Williams said another two houses above the slip were more severely affected and engineers needed to work out how unstable they were and what measures would be needed to secure the slip face.
