The Fox

The cunning fox hunts by mesmerising its intended prey. Often the Fox will perform a crazy cavorting ‘dance’ in a field close by to where a unsuspecting rabbit will reside. The Fox will juimp crazily into the air and make itself as noticeable as it can so the rabbit will be aware of its presence. The Fox’s intention is to enchant and mesmerise the rabbit with its ‘show’ … and as the rabbit watches the dance … the Fox will move gradually closer and closer until it is within striking range of the rabbit …

The fox was a common symbol for the devil during the middle ages. One of the oldest tales about the fox describes it feigning death in order to trap fowl. This fox is a symbol of the devil tempting man; therefore, it may be a reminder to the bearer to stay alert and resist temptation. The fox was also used to symbolise the struggle of the ordinary common folk against the feudal baron. It is therefore a symbol of one who will use all his shrewdness, sagacity, wit or wisdom for his own defense. It occurs quite frequently as a heraldic charge.
