Landslides Bury Dozens in Java

Dozens of people have been killed by landslides on the Indonesian island of Java.The landslides - described as the worst to hit the region in 25 years - were triggered by 12 hours of non-stop heavy rain. (Sky News Thursday 27th December 2007)

They struck several areas on the east side of the island where millions of people live in mountainous regions and near flood plains close to rivers.

An official said 61 people were buried in Karanganyar district and 17 others were feared dead in nearby Wonogiri.
