Thousands of homes still without power

There will be no cups of hot tea this morning in about 50,000 homes in the upper North Island (New Zealand), because of yesterday's big storm.

Power lines are down in parts of Rodney, Waitakere and the North Shore.

David Neil, emergency management advisor with Civil Defence, says it could be a while before engineers are able to restore power to all the homes on because it is too dangerous for repair crews to climb poles when it is windy. But he says work is continuing to restore power as soon as possible.

There are also outages in pockets south of Auckland and lines company Vector says crews have been working through the night to repair the damage. (NZ News Yahoo)
