First clear image of a distant galaxy as British scientists launch giant radio telescope that will search for alien life

Scientists have captured the first high-resolution image of a distant quasar using a new radio telescope that will one day search for life on other planets.

The quasar, a distant galaxy many billions of light years away, is the first major success a pan-European array of telescopes which will help astronomers answer some of the most fundamental questions about our existence.

As part of the project British universities are joining forces with experts from around the country to construct what will be the first major radio telescope to be built in the UK for decades.
The European Low Frequency Array (Lofar) will collect data which the scientists hope will enable them to detect when the first stars in the universe were formed as well as observe some of the most distant galaxies. (Daily Mail)
