Who took a bite out of the sun? The midnight partial solar eclipse that ended a day before it began

As far as celestial events are concerned, a solar eclipse in the middle of the night is unusual enough. But stargazers across the Northern Hemisphere enjoyed an even rarer event this week, when they witnessed a partial solar eclipse that ended a day before it began. The rare solar eclipse began early on Thursday over north-east Asia, but ended on Wednesday night after its path crossed the International Date Line. The eclipse was seen in northern parts of China, Japan, Siberia, Scandinavia, Scotland and Iceland. The dramatic sight was also enjoyed across much of Alaska and northern Canada. Scientists said the timing of the spectacular meant that it was a rare and special occasion for anyone in the right place to see it. ‘Beautiful and impressive eclipse of midnight sun,’ said Knut Joergen Roed Oedegaard, an astrophysicist at the Norwegian Centre for Science Education in Oslo, Norway....read more>>>...
