 On May 4, 2004, David Reimer drove to a supermarket car park and, still sitting in the car, pulled out a shotgun and killed himself.

His research underpins the central claim we hear so often nowadays: that while biological sex may be innate, ‘gender identity’ — a term that Money helped to popularise, along with coining the term ‘sexual orientation’ — is ‘socially constructed’.
