The Use of Incense In Magick

Incense consists of grains of resins which are sometimes mixed with spices, herbs, woods, and essence oils, which burn with a fragrant odor and have been used widely used by Practitioners of the Magical Arts for countless centuries.

In times past, Magicians would throw these fragrant herbs, woods, and oils onto fires or burning embers to release their fragrant scents and vibrational qualities. It has been known for centuries that the secret and hidden powers of incense is contained in its scent and its vibrational qualities. The wise Magician uses these hidden powers of incense to assist him or her in concentrating and focusing the mind, as well as stimulating the imagination.

As with most incense, it is not the fragrance that is paramount, but the vibrational rate that is emitted while smouldering over the burning charcoal. It should be noted that most incense smells totally different when being burned than they do in their natural state. Therefore, it is important to remember that a Magician does not burn incense for its fragrance, but for the power that it releases while being burned. The Enochian Magician uses incense primarily for the following reasons:

(1) To cleanse and purify any and all Magical tools, implements, and working areas;

(2) To assist in the concentration and focusing of the mind;

(3) To stimulate the imagination;

(4) To raise and enhance his or her vibrational rates;

(5) To raise his or her energy levels;

(6) To banish and exorcise negative entities and influences;

(7) To raise, concentrate, enhance, and contain the Magical energies used in Invocations and Evocations, and ;

(8) To generate and enhance an atmosphere that is attuned to the type of Magical Ritual that is going to be performed.

It is important to remember that there are no "set" formulas for the creation or mixing of different incense. A formula that produces exceptional results for one Magician may not produce the same type of results for another Magician. Therefore, each Magician will invariably create or mix an incense to suit his or her own personal needs or requirements. The wise Magician is never afraid to experiment with the ingredients that are used to create an incense. It is only through this process of "trial and error" that will ultimately lead to a formula that will produce the results that he or she is looking for.
