Tenth of Farmland to be Axed for Net Zero
More than 10% of farmland in England is set to be diverted towards helping to achieve Net Zero and protecting wildlife by 2050, the Environment Secretary will reveal today. The Telegraph has the story.
Swathes of the countryside are on course to be switched to solar farms, tree planting and improving habitats for birds, insects and fish.
The move is part of a consultation being launched by Steve Reed, the Environment Secretary, on how the competing priorities of food production, Net Zero and nature should be reconciled in England.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs estimates that 9% of farmland would need to be removed from food production by 2050 to meet green targets, the Telegraph understands. A further 5% is expected to be mostly taken out of production owing to a decreased level of food output, and another 4% will share space with trees.
Mr Reed will insist that his framework will not impose changes on landowners, but the figures are likely to reignite Labour’s row with farmers who expressed concerns that the strategy could lead to the Government telling them what they can grow and where.

Blair believes this will help “flush out” anti-mass migration populists by forcing them to choose between their rhetoric and actual policy solutions.
He thinks the public will trade privacy for efficiency, and the government will win the debate on digital IDs, which will also help address issues like immigration and benefit fraud.
Former Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair wants his successor as British premier and Labour Party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, to impose a digital ID regime, in part to “flush out” anti-mass migration populists.
“What the populists do is they take a real grievance and they exploit it but they very often don’t want to have a solution because solutions are much tougher than talking about problems,” Blair said, adding: “The grievance would be on immigration that the thing is out of control. The grievance would be on crime that we’re not doing enough on it. So you say, ‘OK, here’s what you do’. And then you have a big political fight. The populist is forced to choose. The FBI’s top expert concluded that the virus leaked from the lab but he was siderailed by the Biden administration, blocked from presenting his evidence at a key White House meeting in August 2021. Three scientists at the National Center for Medical Intelligence, part of the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency, concluded that COVID leaked from a lab but they were muzzled. The Inspector General is conducting an investigation to determine why those experts were silenced. The Department of Energy also concluded that COVID originated in a lab. In September 2023, a senior CIA analyst told a congressional committee that six key CIA analysts had been bribed by the agency to abandon their conclusion that COVID originated in a lab leak.
The Chinese government first admitted that a pandemic had broken out in the city of Wuhan in early 2020. Though the Chinese military-affiliated Wuhan Institute of Virology had been experimenting with bats for years, the Chinese government insisted the new virus came from a nearby marketplace. But the lead scientists involved with bat research had all been struck down by COVID-19 symptoms shortly before the Chinese government denied any responsibility.
The outbreak of COVID-19 spurred one of the most
brazen coverups in modern U.S. history. The National Institute for
Health had been financing gain-of-function research at the Wuhan
Institute of Virology. That type of research seeks to genetically alter
organisms to enable the spread of viruses into new species. Such
research is extremely dangerous; as MIT professor Kevin Esvelt asked in
2021, “Why is anyone trying to teach the world how to make viruses that
could kill millions of people?” The risks were compounded because the
Wuhan Institute had a very poor safety rating. Two years earlier, the
State Department confidentially “warned other federal agencies about
safety issues at Wuhan labs studying bat COVID,” but the public
