Bill Clinton could pose Cabinet problem

Former President Bill Clinton's international business dealings, global foundation and penchant for going off script could present a significant obstacle to Hillary Clinton becoming secretary of state, observers say.

On the one hand, his established relationships with world leaders could instantly make the New York senator a welcome face in embassies around the world. On the other, his complicated global business interests could present future conflicts of interest that result in unneeded headaches for the incoming commander-in-chief.

"These are issues that I'm sure are being discussed, and they will have to be worked out, and it's legitimate to ask these questions," said James Carville, a former aide to the Clintons and CNN contributor.

Two officials with President-elect Barack Obama's transition team confirm to CNN that it is investigating Bill Clinton's finances and post-presidential dealings. As part of the early vetting process, the team is looking for any negative information that could throw the prospect of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state into jeopardy. A particular issue could be the donor list of Bill Clinton's global foundation, which might show connections to international figures who push policies that might conflict with those of the new Obama administration. President-elect Barack Obama has been given his secret service code name – Renegade. Obama had a say in choosing the rebellious name used by his elite protection team.

He was given the choice of several names starting with the letter R.

In the morning the school run - in the afternoon the Oval Office. Just another extraordinary day in the life of Barack Obama.

First he tenderly kissed his two daughters, Malia, 10 and Sasha, 7, as he helped them out of an armour-plated, bullet-proof car, weighed down by their school backpacks.
Then he flew to Washington with his wife Michelle to get his first real taste of life as 44th President of the United States.

At 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it was a rite of passage that has been played out between incoming and outgoing presidents for decades. But never has the White House hosted such a historic transition from the old to the new.

For nearly 22 months on the campaign trail, Barack Obama could only dream about walking into the Oval Office as America’s first black president.

Yesterday, his improbable dream was written into the history books as he got a two-hour look at his new home for the next four years. He will not officially get the keys to the White House until his inauguration on January 20.

The triumphant 47-year-old son of a black Kenyan father and a white mother from Kansas spoke after romping to a landslide victory over crushed Republican candidate John McCain. It was the crowning moment of a staggering rise from being a virtually unknown first-time US senator two years ago to become the most powerful man in the world.

By 4.30am, Obama had collected 333 electoral votes to Mr McCain's 155.

McCain tries to turn must-win states; Obama stays on offense

As they enter their final day of campaigning before Election Day, Sen. John McCain is trying to swing undecided voters in key battleground states, while Sen. Barack Obama is staying on the offensive by campaigning in territory that is usually safely Republican. In addition, both campaigns are ratcheting up their get-out-the-vote efforts, as election officials predict record turnouts -- and long lines -- on Tuesday.McCain on Monday hopes he can shift enough voters in a handful of critical states to give him enough votes to pull a come-from-behind victory. He has an uphill climb. There are few undecided voters left, and McCain will have to sway most of them for him to overcome Obama's lead. Barack Obama is refusing to alter his schedule of high-profile appearances despite increasing fears about his safety.

Security has been stepped up around the Democratic presidential candidate after federal agents foiled a plot by two racists to kill him. Tomorrow he will appear alongside Bill Clinton in Florida where a crowd of more than 100,000 is expected.

Florida is known to be home to a large number of white supremacists with the group Stormfront based in the Palm Beach area. Extra police are likely to be drafted in for the rally with access to Mr Obama restricted to those who have been vetted by his campaign team and undergone stringent security checks.

As the US election enters its final week, and the Democratic presidential candidate remains ahead in almost every poll, concerns remain high among some party members that an attempt on his life could be made.

Mr Obama's bid to become the first black president of America has stirred up hatred among white supremacists. As details of the latest plot emerged it was revealed that secret service agents guarding the senator were unaware of it. According to CBS TV, the Obama campaign only found out about it when his plane landed in Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon.

Daniel Cowart, 20, and Paul Schlesselman, 18, appeared in court on Friday flanked by agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives Agency.

The agency is supposed to share information with the secret service - but the 12 agents assigned to Mr Obama had not been told about the threat. The two skinheads were arrested on Wednesday after shooting at a church in Brownsville, Tennessee.They planned to rob a gun store and go on a murderous rampage, with the black Democrat candidate their final target, court records revealed last night.

The United States presidential election of 2008, scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2008, will be the 56th consecutive quadrennial United States presidential election and will select the President of the United States and Vice President of the United States.

The Republican Party has not officially chosen its nominee, but its presumptive nominee is John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona; Barack Obama, the junior United States Senator from Illinois, has been chosen as the nominee for the Democratic Party.

The 2008 election is particularly notable because it is the first time in U.S. history that two sitting senators will run against each other for president and because it will be the first time an African American will be a presidential nominee for a major party, as well as the first time both major candidates were born outside the continential United States (Hawaii for Obama and the Canal Zone in Panama for McCain).

The election will coincide with the 2008 Senate elections in thirty-three states, House of Representatives elections in all states, and gubernatorial elections in eleven states, as well as various state referendums and local elections.
