Inches away from being America's Fukushima: Nuclear plant dangerously close to being engulfed by Missouri floods

A nuclear plant was inches away from being engulfed by the bloated Missouri River after several levees in the area failed to hold back its surging waters, raising fears it could become America's Fukushima.

Dramatic pictures show the moment the plant was threatened with being shut down today, as water levels rose ominously to within 18 inches of its walls.

The river has to hit 902 feet above sea level at Brownville before officials will shut down the Cooper Nuclear Plant, which sits at 903 feet. It stopped and ebbed slightly yesterday, a reprieve caused by levee breaches in northwest Missouri - for now. Flooding is a major concern all along the river because of the massive amounts of water that the Army Corps of Engineers has released from six dams. Any significant rain could worsen the flooding especially if it falls in Nebraska, Iowa or Missouri, which are downstream of the dams.

The river is expected to rise as much as five to seven feet above the official 'flood stage' in much of Nebraska and Iowa and as much as 10 feet over in parts of Missouri. The corps predicts the river will remain that high until at least August....>>>Read more...

People seeking refuge from the effects of Tropical Cyclone Yasi have been turned away at the entrance to jammed evacuation shelters as the monster storm bears down on north Queensland. Authorities have recorded wind speeds of 295km/h and warned that storm surges of up to 7 metres could hit Cardwell, between Townsville and Cairns, as the cyclone’s expected arrival at 11pm tonight combines with a high tide. The life-threatening system is forecast to cross the coast between Innisfail and Cardwell, with furious winds, torrential rain and floods adding to Queensland’s massive damage bill from natural disasters this summer. About 30 Herald Island properties were evacuated and properties in Maratai, Leigh, Clevedon, Beachlands and Sandspit were flooded by intense rain which hit the city last night. Manley says those areas are likely to be flooded again during high tide at midnight. He has sent workers to shore up the Herald Is properties with sandbags. "Those properties will remain evacuated overnight. People will keep away from those areas." Record flooding in Victoria could continue into next week, as more communities in the north and northwest of the state remain on alert for rising waters. Flooding has now affected 62 towns and more than 4,300 people since heavy rain fell over one quarter of the state last week, while the Wimmera, Avoca and Loddon rivers remain at major flood levels. Levee banks in the towns of Warracknabeal and Kerang narrowly held back floodwaters as they peaked on Wednesday but an anxious wait continues as waters remain high in both communities.
