People Can Lose Their Memory For Unknown Reasons

Experts believe that it is the memories of life experiences that make us full-fledged individuals.

But sometimes people have memory problems. Amnesia can occur, for example, after an injury or illness. However, there are also cases where there were no clear reasons for this. The man’s memories were simply erased, and he did not remember anything about how he lived before.

In January 1887, a 61-year-old resident of Coventry, Rhode Island, USA, named Ansel Bourne , disappeared without a trace. By profession he was a carpenter and an evangelical preacher.

The man simply left the city, taking with him all the savings. It was subsequently revealed that he went to Norristown, Pennsylvania and opened a stationery store there, calling himself Albert J. Brown ....<<<Read More>>>....

The brain reboots at night, scientists have discovered

A team of scientists from University College London has discovered that nighttime sleep plays a key role in resetting the brain, allowing neural connections to rest and regenerate.

This finding adds further support to the synaptic homeostasis hypothesis, which posits that sleep is a mechanism that ensures overall brain health. The study was published in the journal Nature.

One of the study’s authors, biologist Jason Rihel, explains: “While the function of sleep remains mysterious, it may serve as a period of shutdown when connections in the brain can be weakened in preparation for a new day and new learning.”

The researchers studied the synaptic activity of zebrafish, whose brains are relatively easy to observe and analyze. They found that the fish’s neurons made more connections during the day and lost them during sleep...<<<Read More>>>...

Did you know you have a second brain?

[SOTT]: Our guts operate on a quite separate nervous system. Learning more will help control gastrointestinal diseases. Our huge gastrointestinal tracts operate their own nervous system, using neurons that follow different principles from those of brain neurons, according to recent findings: Our approximately seven-meter long gastrointestinal (GI) tract has its own functionally distinct neurons. Since this enteric nervous system (ENS) operates autonomously, it is sometimes referred to as the "second" or "abdominal" brain. While the ENS controls muscle movement (peristalsis) in the gut and its fluid balance and blood flow, it also communicates with the immune system and microbiome.

The "second brain" is not, of course, responsible for thinking or making decisions. But it probably influences our emotions strongly: "The system is way too complicated to have evolved only to make sure things move out of your colon," says Emeran Mayer, professor of physiology, psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.). For example, scientists were shocked to learn that about 90 percent of the fibers in the primary visceral nerve, the vagus, carry information from the gut to the brain and not the other way around. "Some of that info is decidedly unpleasant," Gershon says.

The second brain informs our state of mind in other more obscure ways, as well. "A big part of our emotions are probably influenced by the nerves in our gut," Mayer says. Butterflies in the stomach — signaling in the gut as part of our physiological stress response, Gershon says — is but one example. Although gastrointestinal (GI) turmoil can sour one's moods, everyday emotional well-being may rely on messages from the brain below to the brain above. For example, electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve — a useful treatment for depression — may mimic these signals, Gershon says....<<<Read The Full Article Here>>>...

New Study Shows How Magic Mushrooms Work In The Brain To Dissolve Your Ego

[Waking Times]: A study published last month in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology has shown that psychedelic experiences can dissolve the ego, which is something that psychedelic advocates have been saying for decades.

In the study, researchers looked at how psilocybin affects glutamate activity in the brain. Glutamate is the most common neurotransmitter in the brain which is thought to play a role in self-esteem and other personal traits. The researchers found that glutamate levels seemed to fluctuate during psychedelic experiences.

The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to monitor the brains of 60 healthy volunteers. Among many other significant findings, the researchers observed that different experiences seemed to correlate with different levels of glutamate in different parts of the brain.

In the study, the authors wrote: “Analyses indicated that region-dependent alterations in glutamate were also correlated with different dimensions of ego dissolution. Whereas changes in [cortical] glutamate were found to be the strongest predictor of negatively experienced ego dissolution, changes in hippocampal glutamate were found to be the strongest predictor of positively experienced ego dissolution.”

Through interviews with the volunteers, they did notice a dissolution of the ego, but they are still unsure how it is linked to glutamate levels....<<<Read The Full Article Here>>>...

Psychoneuroimmunology and The Power of the Mind on Disease

[Wake Up World]: We appear to have come a long way in the world of medicine with the eradication of certain diseases such as smallpox, the technology and skill to replace a non-functioning organ, and the ability to live into potentially our 90’s.

With all these advancements, we are chock full of medicines from aspirin to antibiotics to Xanax. There is a pill out there for just about everything, but some things just cannot be healed by Western medicine and don’t need to be. But that’s not a popular belief.

Despite all of the great strides we have made in science, you can still find yourself at the doctor’s office being prescribed a medication before words of your symptoms have barely escaped your lips.

Why this dependence on medicine?...read more>>>...

Debunking popular myths about vitamin C

[Natural News]: There are many myths about vitamin C that spread by word of mouth, text, and the internet. These mistaken notions blind people to the health benefits of ascorbic acid – which is another name for vitamin C – so they need to be busted.

The first myth is that there is a difference between natural vitamin C and its synthetic equivalent. The concern is understandable – artificial versions of natural sweeteners can cause serious illnesses.

Natural vitamin C comes from food sources like citrus fruits. Synthetic vitamin C, on the other hand, is produced in a laboratory.

While the two methods of production are quite different, they result in the same end product. A comparison of the structure of naturally-extracted vitamin C molecules and their synthesized counterparts shows no difference between them. Instead of worrying about nonexistent differences between natural and synthetical vitamin C, one must evaluate the purity of the vitamin itself. The process must produce a very high number of the intended molecule – say, ascorbic acid. At the same time, the process must minimize or eliminate traces of any other particle....read more>>>...

Research Reveals Shocking Information About Sucralose (Splenda) Side Effects

Waking Times: Sucralose (sold under the brand names Splenda, Splenda Zero, Zero-Cal, Sukrana, Apriva, SucraPlus, Candys, Cukren and Nevella, to name a few) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1998 as a tabletop sweetener and for use in products such as baked goods, nonalcoholic beverages, chewing gum, frozen dairy desserts, fruit juices and gelatins. It is also permitted as a general-purpose sweetener for all processed foods.

In the European Union, sucralose is known under the additive code E955. However, this artificial sweetener, like aspartame before it, was approved based on extremely limited evidence of safety, and studies published in the years since it was brought to market confirms early suspicions, showing it is not an inert substance after all; that it accumulates in body fat, disrupts your gut microbiome, and causes metabolic dysregulation and associated health problems...read more>>>...

Do Happy Organs Mean Healthy Organs?

Natural News Blog: Now what in the world do I mean by happy organs? And what does this silly concept have to do with health anyways? As it turns out, quite a lot. Recent research shows that the process of visualization can significantly increase your health, and it’s not by chance. Focused meditation can actually change your brainwaves, and this can have an effect on your immune system, stress responses and more.

Visualization is sometimes referred to as guided imagery or mental imagery. On a very basic level, it is a mind-body medicine technique where a person creates a metal image of a future event. There’s a more to it than that

In fact, visualization is a tried-and-true technique for manifesting a future goal, be it getting a pay raise, going on a vacation or healing from a disease like cancer. And in many instances, it works. Athletes use it to perform their best. CEOs do it to get contracts. And studies in neuroscience show its effectiveness as well....read more>>>...

An introduction to chronic fatigue syndrome: What it is, how to prevent it, and natural ways to treat it

Natural News: If you are always tired, even after taking a good long rest, you could be suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome. A Life Force Homeopathy article offered some tips on how to avoid it, as well as natural ways of treating it.

This isn’t any ordinary fatigue. It is a kind of tiredness that cannot be relieved by ordinary resting. It also gets worse if you are physically active, which forces you to cut back on your activities to conserve your dwindling strength.

A person with chronic fatigue syndrome is plagued with recurring bouts of serious exhaustion for more than six months. The patient has no obvious ailment that would explain the weakness.

Resting does not work. Any physical, or even mental activity, makes the person more tired. In addition, he or she cannot focus because of brain fog and low energy levels.

Most cases are never diagnosed. The disorder leaves no clues for physical and medical exams. So chronic fatigue syndrome often goes untreated...read more>>>...
