The three styles of curiosity

Curiosity is a strong desire to learn or know something. But according to researcher Perry Zurn, curiosity is not a singular thing. In fact, there may be at least three styles of curiosity that could have different benefits for our well-being and for the societies we live in.

In 2019, Zurn analyzed classical texts from the history of philosophy to study the nature of curiosity. Searching for mentions of curiosity in writings by philosophers from Saint Augustine to Friedrich Nietzsche to Jacques Derrida, he uncovered three different models of curiosity:

The busybody: The archetypal gossiper, busybodies like to pick up bits of information about a wide range of topics. They aren't necessarily driven by a particular goal, but just by interest.

The hunter: Hunters seek out specific answers, so they follow a targeted path and try to avoid distractions.

The dancer: Dancers leap to new ideas, put existing ideas together in new ways, or find new ways of framing information. They don't follow a traditional path. According to Zurn, these three styles aren't mutually exclusive; someone exhibiting curiosity might fall into more than one category....<<<Read More>>>...

The Survivor Personality Type

Survival in a deadly crisis is challenging because of the shock and unexpectedness of the threat. During the chaotic turmoil of a deadly emergency some people feel overwhelmed and freeze up. Others panic and may act in senseless ways that reduce their survival chances. Many become highly emotional and believe they are going to die. In contrast, a few people quickly comprehend the reality of the new situation, accept that they could die but don’t panic, and take action to increase their chances of surviving.

In real life deadly situations it is wrong to think that a person will fight to survive at the expense of others. It is not “either me or you”, it is “both me and you.” Stories of survivors usually reveal that in the survival turmoil they extend their coping skills and their commitment to live to those around them. They reflexively act in ways to keep both themselves and others alive.

Being a survivor in life and death emergencies is an outcome from interacting with everyday life in ways that increase the probability of survival when survival is necessary. The more quickly a person grasps the total picture of what is happening, the better his or her chance for survival. The reading of the reality includes a quick empathy assessment of others in the situation. This includes scanning the emotional states of others in the survival situation to judge how helpful or unhelpful they may be and reading the emotional state of any attackers that may have caused the danger.

Alertness, pattern recognition, empathy, and awareness can be viewed as a sort of “open-brainedness.”
This open-brainedness is a mental orientation that does not impose pre-existing patterns on new
information, but rather allows new information to reshape the person’s mental maps. The person who has the best chance of handling a situation well is usually the one with the best mental maps, the best mental pictures or images, of what is occurring around them.

In contrast, those people who are not able to survive well tend to have incorrect or distorted
constructions of what is happening in the world outside their bodies....<<<Read More>>>...

The Driver Personality Type

People who fall into the Driver personality type tend to be very controlling and possibly demanding. They know what they want and they aren’t afraid to let you know. They normally have little to no emotion and make decisions quickly and assertively.

To quickly sum up the characteristics of a driver:

Demands control or will take it when available.

Looks for opportunity to be ‘in charge’.

Will get things done, likes goals and achieving them.

Straight to the point, looks for the bottom line.

Dislikes complexity or ambiguity.
Little patience for the small details that aren’t clearly in line with goal seeking.

Doesn’t like situations where they have no say in what’s happening.

Appears to be arrogant and standoffish.

Can seem overly aggressive, especially in the heat of a project. Will see people as ‘obstacles’ or ‘allies’.

Can appear as Alpha male/female type

Drivers may appear intimidating, however, you must remember to put your emotions aside and not take things personally. Since I would say that I’m an extreme expressive, I find myself to be a very emotional person. By emotional, I mean that I pretty much wear my mood on my shoulders. When I use to work for Mike Ferry, the best trainer and coach from the Real Estate industry, my team leader was a very arrogant driver. He always wanted things done his way or the highway. Our communication was so one sided that I would constantly get mad by just talking to him. However, later, as I began to understand the way people work and make decisions, I realized that it wasn’t his fault for being such a prick, it was mine. Since I wasn’t communicating the way he wants to be communicated to, our personalities clashed. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s about the person in front of you....<<<Read More>>>...

Researchers find 4 distinct personality types

Natural News: There are various tests online which claim that they can determine what your personality type is, but most of the time, they aren’t backed by scientific data. However, according to a study by researchers from Northwestern University, people can be categorized into four unique personality types.

For the study, researchers analyzed data from over 1.5 million questionnaire respondents. The results revealed that there are at least four specific clusters of personality types: average, reserved, self-centered, and role model.

These clusters are based on the five widely accepted basic personality traits, which are agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, neuroticism, and openness. Each of the five personality factors represent a range between two extremes. For instance, extraversion indicates the continuum between extreme extraversion and extreme introversion. The researchers noted that the results of the study challenge existing paradigms in psychology...read more>>>...
