Starmer Slashes Net Zero Taxes to Save Britain’s Industries
As part of the Government’s long-awaited Industrial Strategy, the Prime Minister is to cut power bills by up to 25% for some 7,000 “electricity intensive” manufacturers, including car makers, aircraft factories and chemical plants.
From 2027, they will no longer have to pay the Net Zero levies that are normally added to their power bills, such as the renewables obligation, the feed-in-tariff and capacity market charges.
This will be paid for by financial reforms to the energy market and a raid on companies that burn natural gas, through higher carbon taxes, the Government said.
However, the support was at risk of being diluted on Sunday as Iran’s threat to cut off a vital oil and gas supply route in the Middle East risked sending energy prices around the globe soaring.
It comes after repeated warnings that British manufacturers are labouring under the highest industrial electricity prices of any developed country, with output down by a third since 2021.
Sir Keir’s announcement was welcomed by manufacturers, including Derby-based Rolls Royce, as a “giant and much needed step forward”.
The Prime Minister said: “This Industrial Strategy marks a turning point for Britain’s economy and a clear break from the short-termism and sticking plasters of the past.
“In an era of global economic instability, it delivers the long term certainty and direction British businesses need to invest, innovate and create good jobs that put more money in people’s pockets as part of the plan for change.

The carbon cost of AI reasoning: A new environmental challenge
The study, conducted by a team of researchers led by Maximilian Dauner at Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences in Germany, was published on June 19 in the journal Frontiers in Communication. The research highlights the environmental trade-offs associated with the quest for more accurate AI models.
The study focused on the carbon emissions produced by different large language models (LLMs) when answering a series of questions across various topics, including algebra and philosophy. The researchers used the Perun framework to analyze the performance and energy consumption of 14 LLMs, ranging from seven to 72 billion parameters, on an NVIDIA A100 GPU. They then converted the energy usage into CO? emissions, assuming each kilowatt-hour of energy produces 480 grams of CO?.
It found that reasoning models, which use a "chain-of-thought" approach to break down complex problems into smaller, logical steps, were significantly more energy-intensive than their more concise counterparts. On average, reasoning models generated 543.5 tokens per question, compared to just 37.7 tokens for concise models. Thousands join anti-geoengineering protest in London, and they have good reason
In 2014 that the UK Government denied it was undertaking geoengineering activities and stated that, conversely, the Department of Energy and Climate Change had funding projects to examine the effects of solar radiation modification.
In April 2025, it was announced that the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency (“ARIA”) will be given the green light to begin experiments to dim sunlight, which could include injecting aerosols into the atmosphere or brightening clouds to reflect sunshine, for which the agency has set aside £50 million of taxpayer’s money.
Of course, its proponents market solar geoengineering as a beneficial and harmless way to address the manufactured climate change crisis, despite reports last week that hostile states could use solar geoengineering to “orchestrate environmental disaster,” which has caused UK Ministers to now prepare for a scenario in which a hostile foreign power could weaponise sun dimming technology.
Orchestrating an environmental disaster by their own government is the reason why the UK public is resistant to the Government’s chemtrailing operations, whether they refer to them as experiments or not.
On Saturday, 21 June, an anti-geoengineering protest, organised by Stop Geoengineering London, was held in London to raise awareness that many are opposed to UK government-funded geoengineering experiments, specifically solar radiation management (“SRM”).

Absolutely Dotty! Government Blows Over Half a Million on Website Revamp That Involved Moving a Full Stop
The gov.uk site, used by millions for essential services such as tax returns and passport renewals, will see its traditional black masthead turned blue and its ‘dot’ coloured turquoise.
The tweaks were commissioned as part of “brand refresh” with contracts totalling £532,000 handed to global ad agency M&C Saatchi.
The costly new logo, set to go live this month, has already met with ridicule from civil servants, with one mocking online: “Did someone really get paid to move a dot?”
Others labelled it “cheap”, “tacky” and “absolutely diabolical”.
Zia Yusuf, head of Reform UK’s efficiency drive, last night branded the revamp a waste of public money.
He said: “The disrespect for taxpayers’ money continues to be astounding.
“Spending more than £500,000 on changing a logo on a government website is a joke at the taxpayer’s expense, quite literally.
“This is just the kind of thing we have been uncovering in county halls on a daily basis. It’s abundantly clear that Whitehall also needs a visit from Reform’s DOGE team.”
Two contracts for the brand refresh were tendered by the previous Conservative government and carried on under Labour, according to publicly available papers.
Communications giant M&C Saatchi secured deals potentially worth up to £750,000.
A government source said the final bill came to £532,000, which the cost drawn from existing department budgets.

1. There is no life after death. Death is the total extinction of consciousness.
2. Life after death continues on earth (through reincarnation).
3. Life continues after death on another plane than that of earthly reality (such as in heaven or hell).
If we’re going to talk about this subject at all, we can rule out the first option categorically, especially since practically every culture and religion teaches that there is some form of life after death. There are many discussions of the evidence for the afterlife, and while this is a fascinating subject, it’s out of the scope of this article.
Which, then, of the two remaining options is most likely? Usually these are simplistically conceived. You reincarnate: depending on your karma, you come back down to earth to live again as a sage or a stockbroker. Or you are judged before the heavenly throne and are sent up to heaven or down to hell once and for all.

Post Office scandal: ‘Hugely significant’ evidence unearthed in computer expert’s garage
A damning report into the faulty Post Office IT system that preceded Horizon has been unearthed after nearly 30 years – and it could help overturn criminal convictions.
The document, known about by the Post Office in 1998, is described as “hugely significant” and a “fundamental piece of evidence” and was found in a garage by a retired computer expert.
Capture was a piece of accounting software, likely to have caused errors, used in more than 2,000 branches between 1992 and 1999.
It came before the infamous faulty Horizon software scandal, which saw hundreds of sub-postmasters wrongfully convicted between 1999 and 2015.

Past the event horizon? OpenAI’s Sam Altman says so. New AI research backs him up
Altman’s blog created a buzz on social media, with many speculating about what new development had caused Altman to write those words and others accusing Altman of shameless hype. In AI circles, “takeoff” is a term of art. It refers to the moment AI begins to self-improve. (People debate about “slow take off” and “fast take off” scenarios. Altman titled his blog “The Gentle Singularity,” so it would seem Altman is positioning himself in the slow—or at least, slowish—takeoff camp.)
In the blog, Altman made it clear he was not yet talking about completely automated self-improvement. Rather, he was talking about AI researchers using AI to help them develop yet more capable AI. “We already hear from scientists that they are two or three times more productive than they were before AI,” he wrote. “We may be able to discover new computing substrates, better algorithms, and who knows what else. If we can do a decade’s worth of research in a year, or a month” then the rate of AI progress will accelerate from its already rapid clip.
Altman allowed that “ of course this isn’t the same thing as an AI system completely autonomously updating its own code, but nevertheless this is a larval version of recursive self-improvement.”

Assisted Suicide to Become Law as MPs Back Bill by 23 Votes
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill was supported by 314 votes to 291, a majority of 23, as it cleared the Commons, paving the way for assisted dying services to be introduced by the end of the decade.
The legislation will now go to the House of Lords for further scrutiny but the decision by MPs to give the Bill its third reading means it is now almost guaranteed to make it onto the statute book and become law.
The bill will allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales, with fewer than six months to live, to apply for an assisted death, subject to approval by two doctors and a panel featuring a social worker, senior legal figure and psychiatrist.
Critics of the legislation have warned its safeguards are not strong enough and vulnerable people could be coerced or feel pressured into ending their lives early.
The margin of victory was significantly smaller than it was in November last year when MPs backed the Bill in principle by 330 votes to 275, a majority of 55.
Sir Keir Starmer voted in favour of the Bill but other Cabinet heavyweights, including Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner, voted against.
In the debate, Labour MP and former shadow minister for disabled people Vicky Foxcroft highlighted opposition from disabled people, who are among those most likely to experience pressure and coercion in relation to ending their lives.
I don’t claim that every disabled person opposes assisted dying but I do claim that the vast majority of disabled people and their organisations oppose it.

U.K. police deploy controversial AI surveillance tool built by Palantir
An internal police memo obtained via freedom of information laws confirms plans to nationally deploy the AI system called Nectar. The technology, developed with Silicon Valley-based Palantir Technologies, is currently piloted by Bedfordshire Police and has already cost the force £1.4 million ($1.9 million) over the past two years.
The 34-page internal briefing outlines how Nectar merges around 80 different police data sources, from traffic cameras to intelligence reports, into one unified platform designed to generate real-time, detailed profiles on suspects, victims, witnesses and vulnerable individuals, including children.
The document states the goal is to "eventually apply [Nectar] nationally" to "better protect vulnerable people by preventing, detecting and investigating crime." Nectar accesses 11 categories of "special category information" under U.K. data protection laws, reserved for particularly sensitive data. This includes race, political views, religious beliefs, health records, sexual orientation, sex life, union membership and biometric or genetic data. Police to collect ethnicity data for all cases of child sexual abuse
Yvette Cooper has condemned damning failures by the authorities to protect children from grooming gangs as she announced there would be a formal requirement on police for the first time to collect ethnicity and nationality data for all cases of child sexual abuse and exploitation.
The home secretary confirmed the government would accept all 12 recommendations of Louise Casey’s rapid review, including setting up a statutory inquiry into institutional failures, marking a significant reversal after months of pressure on Labour to act.
In her rapid review, Lady Casey found evidence of “over-representation” of Asian and Pakistani heritage men among suspects in local data – collected in Greater Manchester, West and South Yorkshire – and criticised a continued failure to gather robust data at a national level.
She found evidence that some authorities refused to take into account the ethnicity of offenders out of fear of appearing racist, and said “blindness, ignorance, prejudice, defensiveness and even good, but misdirected intentions, all played a part in this collective failure”.
“While much more robust national data is needed,
we cannot and must not shy away from these findings, because, as
Baroness Casey says, ignoring the issues, not examining and exposing
them to the light, allows the criminality and depravity of a minority of

Government Admits Fossil Fuel Use is Cheaper than Net Zero Technology
Labour Ministers are expected to double down on expanding the use of green technologies to lower costs as the Treasury and Department for Business and Trade are set to unveil the UK’s industrial strategy next week.
The blueprint for growing the economy will outline plans to lower energy costs. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) saw its budget increase by 16% at the Spending Review, with more funding set to go towards nuclear power and clean energy in a bid to remove nearly all fossil fuels from UK electricity production by 2030.

Starmer to Count Rural Broadband as Defence Spending to Get Round NATO Rules
The Government’s national security review, due to be published before a NATO summit next week, will expand the definition to include economic stability, food prices, supply chains, crime and the internet.
It could allow the UK to hit NATO’s new defence spending target of 5% of GDP without committing any further public money.
Mark Rutte, NATO’s Secretary General, has proposed member states spend 3.5% on core defence activities and a further 1.5% on related infrastructure.

According to a cybersecurity campaigner, electric vehicles capture and store a huge amount of data, including location details, facial expressions, and genetic and health information, which are shared with various organisations, including data brokers.
A computer engineer highlighted cybersecurity failures in EV chargers. Using the example of one brand of charger, he explained how hackers are able to easily steal the EV owner’s wi-fi password.

The Seeker who asks the questions is sometimes a young person, just waking up to the sense that something is not right in the world—or perhaps within themselves. Other times, the Seeker is older, someone who has seen much, experienced much, and yet feels empty in what they have attained.

Why is the Civil Service Muslim Network Allowed to Shape Government Policy?
This is how I read the Times’s story last week about the “Civil Service Muslim Network“.
In Zoom meetings attended by hundreds of (seemingly primarily Muslim)
civil servants, the group’s leader, a Department for Environment Food
and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) employee named Sami Rahman, made many remarks
which seem obviously antisemitic, such as describing Israel as Shaitan
(Arabic for ‘the Devil’). He also openly encouraged Muslim Network
members to influence and even oppose government policy, saying: “Whether
it’s Islamophobia or anti-Muslim hatred, whether it’s Palestine, or OPT
[occupied Palestinian territories], whether it’s any other thing… it’s a
time for both setting agendas, but resisting them as well.” He added
that “working in central government, we do have responsibility to be

The UK does not have the money or resources to achieve “Net Zero”; it risks a financial crash by decade’s end
He wrote to Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband to say that the Net Zero targets are an engineering fantasy because the costs are enormously prohibitive and the workforce needed is not available. He is calling for open debate on these issues and says engineering’s professional bodies are not acting responsibly in their silence.
In February, he joined NTD’s Lee Hall to discuss the UK government’s Net Zero fantasy.
To achieve Net Zero, the UK would need to spend around £1.4 trillion, have 40,000 civil and electrical engineers working full-time for 30 years, and three times as many skilled tradespeople, as well as a vastly increased amount of materials, he explained.
The scale of the project to expand the grid and rewire houses would be equivalent to one HS2 programme each and every year between now and 2050, requiring a significant workforce and materials that are not currently available.
“Everybody assumes it’s possible and they go along with the fiction, even people I know who know it’s not possible, they say ‘we’re going along for the ride’,” he said. “I regard that as unethical, and certainly unprofessional on the part of engineers.”
The current electrical grid is not sufficient to support the transition to net zero, with the need for additional energy to power heating and electric vehicles, requiring a potential increase in grid size of 2.7 times, nearly triple the size of the current grid.
Upgrading the grid and retrofitting
homes to support net zero would be extremely costly, with estimates
suggesting a cost of around £1.4 trillion for the grid and potentially
