THE worst rain for 50 years is expected across Britain today. The country is braced for chaos with widespread flooding, just in time for Wimbledon.Experts said that conditions would be “exceptional” and “horrendous”. Four inches of rain – a quarter more than the average for the whole of June – will fall in just a few hours in some areas, prompting national flood alerts and causing travel disruption across most of England and Wales. Most places will see at least two inches of rain.
Forecasters say for parts of the North-east, which is not used to so much rain, today could go down in history as the wettest ever. And rainfall totals could rival the nationwide wettest day on record. The Met Office has issued early weather warnings for a huge swathe of the country from the Scottish border down to Central and Southern England in preparation for gale force winds blasting up to 50mph and the torrential downpours. They will issue further “flash” alerts as conditions worsen.
