Fears of an Al Qaeda plot to massacre thousands in Britain appeared to heighten last night. The threat of a Mumbai-style machine gun assault is now rated so severe that the U.S. is warning its citizens they could be in danger if they travel to the UK. At the same time, Britons are being told by the Foreign Office that they could face ‘indiscriminate’ attack from Osama bin Laden-inspired fanatics if they travel to France or Germany U.S. intelligence says gunmen plan to open fire on crowds at busy sites in London, Paris and Berlin – mirroring the raid on hotels and bars in Mumbai which killed 175 in 2008. Areas said to be at risk are tourist destinations, hotels, public transport hubs and shopping centres. The City and the Tower of London are said to have been identified as possible targets. It came amid a warning from two former SAS commanders that if terrorists did manage to strike, the country would face a ‘slow motion’ September 11.
