Tesco in 'bomb threat' alert

Police are investigating threats against Tesco after a number of stores were forced to close due to safety fears. A total of 14 stores across the country were shut yesterday with reports some had received bomb threats.

A criminal inquiry is underway but police have ruled out any link to extremism. Instead reports said the motive could range from a financial one to threats by the animal rights lobby. It is believed the closures cost the supermarket giant millions of pounds in lost sales. All stores affected will re-open their doors today. A police spokesman said: “No-one has been injured and Tesco plan to open their stores as soon as possible. While the public are advised to remain vigilant we have no reason to believe that the incidents are linked to extremism of any kind. Every effort is being made to trace those involved.”

The closures affected stores in Lancashire, Suffolk, Dyfed Powys in Wales, Fife and Strathclyde in Scotland, Leicestershire, Humberside, West Mercia, West Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Hertfordshire and London.

Eyewitnesses said the stores started shutting early yesterday afternoon, with at least two people claiming they had been told the closures were due to a bomb scare.(The Sun Online)
