Brown Starts A Bush War
Gordon Brown further cooled relations with George Bush last night by threatening to pull British troops off the streets of Iraq within eight weeks. The Prime Minister ended his first summit meeting with the US President by expressing hope that UK units in Basra will cease patrolling by October. Such a move would be seen as a clear step towards withdrawing British forces from Iraq altogether, although aides insisted there were no moves to “hasten” the pull-out. Mr Brown said: “We can then achieve what we want to do, which is to pass security over to the Iraqi people.” The two leaders spent several hours in talks in the remote wooden “Laurel Cabin” house on the President’s mountain retreat at Camp David, Maryland. Mr Bush attempted to bond with the new Prime Minister over a lunch of cheeseburgers and fries. But when they emerged in the afternoon, Mr Brown remained awkward and formal in the President’s company, in contrast with the approach of Tony Blair. (Daily Express)
