It was a calm summer morning on the chalk downs south of Avebury, England, where Silbury Hill, Stonehenge and other ancient monuments still brood over the landscape.

On 6 July 2009, an off-duty Wiltshire police sergeant was driving west along the A4 past Silbury Hill — a 129-foot prehistoric chalk mound and UNESCO World Heritage landmark — when three figures in white coveralls appeared in a field opposite. Thinking they were forensic officers, he braked hard, climbed out, and walked toward them. The trio were crouched over the barley beside the so-called "Mayan" crop circle, an imprint that case-investigator Andy Russell later told Liberation Times was "definitely man-made."

Andy Russell recounts what happened next - according to the police sergeant, who has kept his identity secret to this day: 

 They [the three beings] seemed to be inspecting the crop. When he got to the edge of the field he heard what he believed to be a sound not dissimilar to static electricity. This crackling noise seemed to be running through the field and the crop was moving gently close to where the noise was moving. He felt the hair on his arms and back of his neck raise up. He shouted to the figures who at first ignored him, not glancing at him. When he tried to enter the field they looked up and began running.

He said: "They ran faster than any man I have ever seen. I'm no slouch but they were moving so fast. I looked away for a second and when I looked back they were gone. I then got scared. Silbury Hill - one of the most mysterious and striking monument in Britain - was a prehistoric 'cathedral', built layer by layer over 100 years, a new study suggests. The 4,000 year old earth mound, which towers over the Wiltshire countryside, was the tallest man-made structure in Europe until the Middle Ages. But despite its size, and repeated attempts to tunnel into the heart of the mound, archaeologists have long been puzzled about how and why it was created.

In a book published by English Heritage suggests that the 120 ft high hill was not built to a grand blueprint, but was assembled by at least three generations of Bronze Age Britons between 2400 and 2300 BC. A study of soil, rocks, gravel and tools inside the hill show that it went through 15 distinct stages of development.

Dr Jim Leary, English Heritage archaeologist, said the creators were building the mound as part of a 'continuous story telling ritual' - and that the final shape of the mound may have been unimportant. He argues that the familiar outline of stepped sides and the flat top visible today is largely the result of Anglo-Saxons and later alterations.

Silbury Hill is situated outside the stone circle of Avebury, and has a Neolithic origin when the first layer was laid on the valley floor, it is believed to be an integral part of the Avebury complex of monuments. It is the largest man made mound in Europe rising 130ft from its base, the purpose of its construction can only presently be speculated although various archaeology excavations have been attempted over the last 300 years. This has been carried out from the top by means of a vertical shaft, and also a tunnel through its side has failed to reveal its secrets. However archaeologists, have speculated it may have been used for ritual or astronomical purposes.

Silbury is very impressive when seen for the first time, rising out of a flat meadow like an up turned cauldron, where there is a definite ridge at the top which was not filled with chalk rubble. It must have been quite impressive having this white chalk mound dominating the landscape, along with the West Kennet Barrow on the opposite hill to the south. UFOs pose no threat to Briton or so says the MoD

The Ministry of Defence will no longer investigate UFO sightings after ruling there is "no evidence" they pose a threat to the UK despite a senior aviation official admitting the country is visited by one unidentified flying object a month. Those who have long feared an invasion from Mars or further afield can relax - at least, that is, if they believe the Ministry of Defence. An end has been ordered to all official investigations of Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFOs, after the ministry ruled they do not pose a threat to the nation's security. It comes as the head of UK Air Traffic Control admitted the country is visited by around one unidentified flying object a month. Asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme about the existence of UFOs, Mr Deakin confirmed they were still being seen by his staff. He said: "Occasionally there are objects identified that do not conform to normal traffic patterns. It does not occupy a huge amount of my time. There are approximately one a month."
