The applause for Burnham scrapping Starmer’s digital ID arrived before anyone checked what survived it

The new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is in Downing Street, and he has spent twenty years telling you exactly what he wants to do to the internet. He won the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026. He then collected the backing of roughly 349 Labour MPs, more than 85 per cent of the parliamentary party. By the time he walked through the black door, the job had been settled for weeks.

His first big announcement was the one privacy campaigners had been hoping for. Starmer’s digital ID scheme for all adults is dead, scrapped before Burnham had finished unpacking, the money moved to the cost of living. The applause came quickly. Perhaps it should not have.

This is a read on a government barely a day old. On speech and privacy, the early signals point one way, and it is not the way that loosens the state’s grip. He is not about to tear up the settlement he inherits from Keir Starmer. The open question is how much further he carries it.

Miliband Willing to Approve North Sea Oil to Land Job as Chancellor

Ed Miliband wants to approve drilling in the North Sea to calm market jitters about his possible appointment as Chancellor and prove he is no Net Zero “zealot”.

The Energy Secretary has privately signalled his willingness to grant consent for drilling at the Jackdaw gas field but cannot publicly confirm the move until a consultation closes next month.

Jackdaw, off the coast of Aberdeen, is one of two licences in the North Sea currently held in legal limbo. The other site, Rosebank, would produce oil to be sold in a global market, but Jackdaw would be able to provide enough fuel to heat 1.4 million British homes this winter.

Miliband is keen to show the markets he would be willing to put Britain’s economic growth ahead of his Net Zero ambitions if he became Chancellor amid reports more wealthy people are planning to flee Britain if he moves into No. 11.

Andy Burnham, who is set to become Prime Minister next Monday, has already said he is “open minded” about North Sea drilling to help combat Britain’s cost-of-living crisis.

Burnham “Plans £38 Billion Tax Raid’

 Andy Burnham is to launch a £38 billion tax raid on the wealthy to fund a spending spree in office, analysis by Reform UK has found – taking Labour’s total tax increases to more than £100 billion a year. The Telegraph has the story.

A report into the Prime Minister-in-waiting’s pledges found Burnham would bring Labour’s total increase in taxation from around £66 billion to more than £100 billion a year.

This includes promises of a ‘care levy’ of up to 10% of the value of estates after death, reforming the rates of capital gains tax (CGT) and imposing National Insurance on landlords’ rental income.

Implementing a torrent of new taxes not mentioned in Labour’s 2024 manifesto will increase pressure on Burnham to call an early election. He is due to be elected unopposed as Labour leader and Prime Minister on Friday.

Robert Jenrick, Reform’s Economy Spokesman, said: “Andy Burnham has spent 20 years reaching for other people’s money – a death tax on family homes, a graduate tax on young people getting their first pay cheque, a £14 billion raid on savings and investment and new levies on everything from your parking space at work to your weekend away.

European Parliament Imposes Mass Electronic Surveillance Regulation After a Majority Votes it Down Three Times

 That title is polemical, okay? But it’s morally right.

If anybody cares, what actually happened is that an extension of the European Union’s mass surveillance regulation known as Chat Control 1.0 failed to make it out of the European Parliament twice in March. 

Unable to summon a clear parliamentary majority, advocates (mostly in the centre-Right European People’s Party (EPP)) turned to the European Council, which adopted the failed Chat Control 1.0 renewal on July 2nd. The Council’s position hardens automatically into law unless the European Parliament can summon an absolute majority to stop it. 

To forestall any such majority from forming, the EPP on Tuesday moved with member state backing for urgent procedure, angling to force their scheme through in the last days before the summer holiday, after many MEPs had already left. The parliament narrowly approved the urgent procedure, and in consequence there were not enough votes to stop Chat Control 1.0 when it came for a vote today. Hours ago, a majority of 314 MEPs voted to stop Chat Control against the wishes of the Council, while a minority of 276 voted to let it happen. Because 314 is less than the absolute majority of 361, Chat Control 1.0 passed even though most MEPs present didn’t want it to.

It was a sleazy vote, not least because it’s far from clear this procedural manoeuvre was even appropriate in this case. Also, electronic surveillance is bad, but if we are honest with ourselves this battle was already lost.

Chat Control 1.0 was first instated in 2021 as a temporary exemption to the ePrivacy Directive of the EU, allowing messaging services and online platforms to scan chats and other electronic communications for child sexual abuse material. The exemption expired in April, but various platforms have continued their surveillance with no legal basis in the intervening months. Now their formal permission to scan our private communications has been restored and extended through April 2028. We are, in other words, merely returning to the prior regime.

Chat Control 1.0 is a temporary stopgap while the European Parliament, the Commission and the Council try to negotiate their Child Sexual Abuse Regulation, or Chat Control 2.0. As envisioned by the Commission, this permanent law would not merely allow platforms to scan private communications for child sex abuse material, but require them to do so; would require additional AI-assisted automated scanning not only for known child pornography but also for such vaguely defined activities as ‘grooming’; and would extend scanning to end-to-end encrypted services like Signal via mandatory monitoring on the client side. This insane proposal has been watered down over the years, in large part because of parliamentary opposition, but it’s coming in some form. We’re getting Chat Control 2.0 before Chat Control 1.0 expires, and Chat Control 2.0 will be at least somewhat worse....<<<Read More>>>...

An Attack on All Our Rights

 Have you heard about the new piece of legislation, tabled by the Home Secretary, which is “opening the door to a gradual erosion of all our rights and freedoms”? I ask because I received an email this morning from the human rights charity Liberty alerting me to this danger. Apparently, Shabana Mahmood (that strangest and rarest of beasts – a competent Labour Minister) is plotting to put “people’s rights at risk to score political points” and “weaken the European Convention” by making it easier to deport people. And this will apparently constitute an “attack on all our rights”.

The attack in question is coming in the form of the Immigration and Asylum Bill 2026, which is due to have its second reading on July 13th. The bill does rather a lot, and bits of it are actually very welcome – it indicates that (my goodness) some thought has gone into what the Government is trying to do in respect of immigration policy. But that’s for another day. Today I want to focus in particular on Liberty’s remarks about the aspects of the bill which deal with Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the so-called ‘right to family life’, and what this demonstrates about the, frankly, debased and rather silly way in which human rights advocates think (or, rather, don’t think) about the values they hold dear. This will in turn lead us to the problem lying at the heart of human rights law, which is that it is not really law and, moreover, not even a coherent or sensible concept....<<<Read More>>>...

Left-wing politicians’ disdain for patriotism and British culture is behind their war on national flags

 The display of national flags, such as the Union Jack and St George’s Cross, is being met with hostility from left-wing politicians, who claim it creates “fear and division” in local communities.

The true reason for the ban, Paul Embery says, is their disdain for patriotism and traditional British culture.

What is it about our national flag that brings out such hypocrisy in the metropolitan elites? Why do these people, who seem entirely relaxed about the display of virtually every other kind of flag, even politically contentious or divisive ones, exhibit such hostility towards the colours of their own nation?

In recent days, Oxfordshire County Council became the first local authority to successfully impose a legal ban on the placement of flags on lampposts, after activists from the ‘Raise the Colours’ campaign had festooned some streets with the Union Jack and St George’s Cross.

The council is run by – no surprises here – the Liberal Democrats. In the high court, where it was seeking an injunction against the activists, the council claimed that the display of flags from roadside infrastructure gave rise to serious safety concerns.

But its leader, Tim Bearder, had already disclosed what appeared to be the real reason for the ban, telling the media before the court hearing that the flags were creating “fear and division” in local communities...<<<Read More>>>....

Andy Burnham Will “Control” Immigration the Same Way He “Controlled” Homelessness – By Increasing It

Whilst mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham ‘solved’ homelessness there: by increasing it. Once elected in 2017, he pledged to end all rough sleeping in the city by 2020 through a scheme called A Bed Every Night, or ABEN – if he’d called it A Bed Every Day, it could have been ABED, which is an actual relevant word. The plan had even more serious problems than its botched acronym, because, despite initial success, by the time Andy left office the number of rough sleepers across Greater Manchester had begun to rise precipitously, almost doubling between 2022 and 2026. At this rate, the problem will soon end up even worse than when Andy became mayor in the first place.

The flaw was that, once indigents nationwide heard of Manchester’s ABEN and its early triumphs, they actively hitched to the city using its world-famous yellow bus network to take advantage of it, flooding the place with more hobos than a cardboard-box factory. The end result was tent-cities full of druggies and refugees, with the previous central parkland beauty-spot of Piccadilly Gardens now rechristened ‘Crackadilly Gardens‘. An unnamed city council source told local news outlet the Mill that: “A lot are under the perception they’re going to get a council house if they come to Manchester, which they aren’t.” The Mill spoke to one unhappy camper named Mohamed, who moved to Manchester from Birmingham, for one reason only: “I want a home.” A free one. Because he thinks he was promised one by Andy Burnham. Dale Vince: Ed Miliband Has Turned Net Zero Toxic

 Green energy tycoon Dale Vince has blamed Ed Miliband for the “toxification of Net Zero” and branded him unfit to become Chancellor. The Telegraph has more.

The Labour donor accused the Energy Secretary of putting “ideology before the economy” and questioned whether he had a grasp of “even the basic notion of value for money”.

Miliband’s spending record in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) demonstrated his economic incompetence, Vince told the Telegraph.

In particular, the green energy entrepreneur criticised the decision to commit tens of billions of pounds to heat pumps and carbon capture technology, the latter of which remains largely unproven on a global scale.

“It’s about economic competence,” he said. “It’s about having an understanding of even the basic notion of value for money. I question whether he has that when you look at spending decisions like carbon capture and storage.

“It’s madly uneconomic so this makes me question whether he’s putting ideology in front of [the] economy. We need something else from a Chancellor and someone who is more business-like.”

Is Mahmood’s proposed new immigration scheme the official start of the UN’s “replacement migration”?

 The UN has long advocated for a system of “replacement migration.” The reasoning the UN uses is to replace the populations where birth rates are low with migrants from countries where the birth rates are high.

At the end of June, Shabana Mahmood, the UK Home Secretary, announced a new refugee sponsorship route for refugees. For refugees to enter the UK, they must be referred by the UNHCR.

In other words, the UN is deciding how many refugees enter the UK and from where. Mahmood is outsourcing control of the UK’s borders to the UN. However, as The Spectator observed, “The idea that Burnham has almost single-handedly turned Greater Manchester into an economic powerhouse against the backdrop of a stagnant Britain is based on numbers that don’t quite add up … a lot of the economic success Burnham now takes credit for were set in motion long before he’d even finished his first term as a minister in the Blair government … But his claims really start to come off the rails when you look at productivity. Burnham’s supporters talk up a Manchester ‘productivity miracle’ but the data underpinning that claim looks a tad dodgy.”

Is Andy Burnham About to Accidentally Prove Britain Has Never Been a Nation of Immigrants?

 Britain has many quaint and ancient laws which have never been properly repealed. Either genuinely, or merely according to urban legend, even to this day it is supposed to be unlawful to enter Parliament wearing a suit of armour, to ask a taxi-cab passenger if they have the plague, to show a child aged under 10 a naked mannequin while in Scotland, or to be found in a state of drunkenness inside a pub. As late as 2001, it was still technically illegal for a Jew to live in Leicester. Today, given that city’s growing Muslim population, this same restriction is still informally true, just not in writing (yet).

Another picturesque old semi-mythical British law is that a Catholic is not allowed to become Prime Minister, an alleged hangover from the days before the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829, prior to which filthy Papists like myself were barred from most meaningful fields in public life, like politics and higher education. The same prohibition once stood for Jews in this country, who did not win initial Emancipation until even later, in 1859. It is sometimes said that this antique rule preventing a Catholic or a Jew from becoming PM still applies, although in truth it probably doesn’t. What is not in serious dispute is that, under the terms of current, never-repealed law, any Catholic – or Jewish – PM must not personally advise the Crown about the appointment of Church of England bishops. As the CofE by convention passes a name, or pair of names, to the PM to look over for each newly appointed bishop before appointment, this could theoretically pose an obscure constitutional problem for Burnham should he now become Prime Minister, as expected, following his depressingly large June 18th victory in the Makerfield by-election....<<<Read More>>>...

Allies of Sir Keir Starmer believe he is preparing to step down as he realises the “game is up” after facing an evaporation of support over the weekend. The Telegraph has the story.

A senior Government figure told the Telegraph the embattled Prime Minister was realising that the “game is up” and his thoughts were turning to how he could “shore up his legacy”.

They said there had been “quite a bit of movement” among Cabinet Ministers since Andy Burnham’s Makerfield by-election victory, leading Sir Keir to reconsider his previous commitment to soldiering on.

One Labour MP, who is usually considered to be a loyalist to the Prime Minister, said he believed Sir Keir would announce his departure date as soon as Monday given that his support among MPs was now down to only a handful of “friends and family”.

“There’s no one left. Literally people whose relatives work in No. 10 or people who are long term personal friends of Keir’s are pretty much the only ones left,” they said, adding that trying to stand in the way of Burnham’s path to Downing Street was “like trying to fight gravity”.

One Government figure predicted that “something will have happened by the end of the week”, warning that if Sir Keir did not resign “we could end up in mass resignation territory”.

Starmer Bows to Miliband’s Demands to Go Faster on Renewables and Commit to No New Drilling in North Sea

 Sir Keir Starmer bowed to Ed Miliband’s demands to go faster on wind and solar power and commit to no new drilling in the North Sea as he unveiled a flagship “Energy Independence Bill” in the King’s Speech. The Mail has more.

The Prime Minister backed the Energy Secretary’s plans to ensure the country goes “further and faster to deliver clean energy”.

But there was no mention of whether the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields in the North Sea would be approved.  Instead, the bill restates the commitment to not issue new licences for exploration and keep the ban on fracking.

While the Labour manifesto commits the party to not issuing new North Sea oil and gas licences, this will be the first time that the pledge is written into law.

The move will infuriate those who have been arguing for Britain to use homegrown oil and gas rather than relying on expensive imports.

The UK’s exposure to global energy prices has meant it has been far more impacted than other countries through bills and inflation.

Despite this, Miliband has refused to make use of the North Sea supplies and instead focused on renewables.

The Energy Independence Bill also commits to “accelerate” the UK’s drive for energy security through wind and solar power and hydrogen.

It restates commitments to reform planning rules to make it easier to install renewable energy infrastructure.

Elsewhere, the bill restates the Budget commitments to move the cost of some green taxes off bills and on to general taxation.

This enables Labour to claim it’s reducing prices though in reality it is just moving the costs so bills look smaller.

Despite the move – and Labour’s pre-election pledge to reduce bills by £300 – energy bills are still £190 higher than when it came to power last year.

They are expected to rise far higher when the next price cap takes effect in July as they will factor in the costs of the Iran war....<<<Read More>>>....

Farage Begs Starmer Not to Quit as Labour Local Election Bloodbath Triggers Calls for PM to Go

 Nigel Farage has begged Keir Starmer not to quit today, quipping he’s the “greatest asset we’ve got”, as Labour’s catastrophic local election bloodbath prompts fresh calls for the PM to go. The Mail has more.

Calls are already emerging for the PM to go with results overnight showing a bloodbath for the party across English councils. A meltdown is also looming in the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Senedd later.

But the Reform leader joked that he would be “very sad” to see Sir Keir ousted – adding “he is the greatest asset we have got”.

Farage boasted of a “truly historic shift in British politics” and said he is heading for No. 10, as Reform plundered seats in previous Labour strongholds in the North and Midlands. It also seized Newcastle-under-Lyme council from the Tories.

Sir Keir said he would not “sugarcoat” the “tough” situation and it “hurt”. He admitted “unnecessary mistakes” had been made.

But he said would not “walk away” and was planning announcements in the coming days to convince the public that “things will get better”. “Days like this don’t weaken my resolve to deliver the change that I promised,” Sir Keir added.

Labour has lost control of Redditch, Hartlepool, Tamworth, Exeter and Tameside councils – the latter after 47 years – following major swings to Reform.

It shipped 15 of 16 seats it was defending on Halton Council in Cheshire to Reform, although it retained overall control.

It was a similar situation in Wigan as Farage’s insurgents scooped all but one of the 25 seats available, including 20 from Labour.

Classic ‘Red Wall’ seats in Chorley, Lancashire, Salford in Greater Manchester and Merseyside also dramatically switched. Things were little better in the South, with Labour booted out of control in Southampton and Wandsworth....<<<Read More>>>...

Political Betting: Will it be ‘Starmageddon’ for Labour in the Local Elections?

 The polls and the pundits are broadly agreed on the outcome of today’s elections – the only issue in doubt is exactly how great the earthquake will be. 

If we map the Richter scale onto our domestic politics, a rating of around five would be expected to “cause some damage to well-designed structures” and a number higher than eight to lead to “total destruction in communities near the epicentre”. Applying such descriptions to the established political parties (as opposed to the voters themselves), I am firmly in the camp that we will be rather closer to eight than to five.

Looking first at the English local elections, the Conservatives and Labour could find themselves battling it out for the wooden spoon, with one of the grand old parties finishing fourth and the other fifth in terms of council seats won.

Reform will comfortably win the day both in terms of NEV (the national equivalent vote share, which maps the results onto a putative General Election) and in terms of councillors. With regard to the latter, the party is currently defending just 78 of the approximately 5,000 seats up for grabs and will likely emerge with more than 1,500. You might still just find odds of 1/50 on Farage’s teal army taking first place if you fancy a 2% return on investment over just a few days.

The scale of the apocalypse facing Labour is almost unimaginable. Last year the party lost two thirds of the seats it was defending and it may fare even worse this time. In absolute rather than relative terms, the position is bleaker still. In 2025, it had fewer than 300 councillors up for re-election as the areas voting were largely the Tory shires. This time, over 2,000 seats start in the Labour column and it could be reduced to 600 or even fewer. Swathes of the party’s campaigning infrastructure will be overwhelmed as a turquoise tsunami engulfs the Red Wall. Outside London it may struggle to maintain majority control in any area at all with ‘all out’ elections – although it has sufficiently impregnable majorities to remain in power in a good number of places which elect in ‘thirds’.

 You can still just about get 1/2 on the betting exchanges that Starmer will be replaced as Labour leader this year, and I believe that represents good value – as does the 5/2 that a new leader will be in position at some point between July and September. (I see the biggest danger to this latter bet being that the thus-far-hapless coup leaders get their act together and somehow manage to manufacture a coronation before the end of next month.)...<<<Read More>>>...

There’s Nothing ‘Decent’ or ‘Competent’ About Keir Starmer

 If there was once thing we were always supposed to believe about Keir Starmer, it’s that he is a technocrat. Boring, sure. Lawyerly, undoubtedly. A man of the system – yes, Mr Speaker. But at least that he was competent and vaguely ‘decent’. All of this, in Starmer’s telling and much of the commentariat’s, placed him in stark contrast to Boris Johnson, the chaotic, devil-may-care populist whose ego meant the rules didn’t apply to him, and the Tories of partygate more generally. Starmer was Mr Rules, Mr Process, who in opposition in 2022, as the very first clause of his “contract with the British people”, pledged a “binding commitment” to “decency and standards in public life”.

Today, with the Mandelson albatross weighing heavier than ever on Starmer’s neck, and his Cabinet debating throwing him overboard in not-so-hushed tones, the twists and turns of this sorry saga have shown that Starmer is anything but. In the latest, Sir Keir is planning to force Labour MPs to vote down any attempt to refer him to a parliamentary sleaze inquiry over the appointment of the Prince of Darkness. This is the same committee which Starmer won great advantage in referring Boris Johnson to in April 2022, shortly before his felling (and which eventually decided that the PM had lied). From the point of view of Keir’s survival this is probably the right move – albeit it sets up an extraordinary test of Labour backbenchers’ careers versus their consciences. But clearly, it is nothing close to allowing “process” to go forward unhindered by political concerns. Like when he banned Manchester mayor and potential leadership rival Andy Burnham from standing in the Gorton and Denton by-election, this is a move of naked political self-interest from a shameless bruiser....<<<Read More>>>....

Labour MPs dismiss the petition to call for a general election as the result of “misinformation” and “foreign interference”

 On Monday, the House of Commons debated the petition “call another general election.”  Here are the highlights.  

If you aren’t one of those who are disappointed in the Labour government or Labour MPs then you need to watch the debate.  It demonstrates why millions registered their dissatisfaction and no confidence in the current UK regime by signing the petition.

Jamie Stone, Scottish Member of Parliament (“MP”) and chairman of the Petitions Committee, opened the debate: “Let us remember that petitions are first and foremost a mechanism of civic engagement and political expression. As individual politicians, each and every one of us resides in this place, in this House, only at the behest of our constituents, and it is surely paramount that a dialogue is always facilitated between us and the public … Ultimately, we work for all those who put their name to this petition.”

It is a fact that on 4 July, the Labour party won a majority, and they will remain in office for the duration of their term or until the Prime Minister seeks permission from the sovereign to dissolve Parliament at a time of his choosing,” he said.

“I think that any Government would be wrong to assume that they act in a vacuum,” he added.

Yasmin Qureshi, Labour Member of Parliament for Bolton South and Walkden, said: “This petition has grown partly because of a lot of misinformation and partly because of foreign interference.”

Trying to make out that the Labour government is looking out for the interests of the UK and its citizens which justifies the much-touted “tough decisions” it has had to make such as removing winter fuel bills for the elderly, introducing inheritance tax for farmers and raising national insurance contributions, Quereshi said: “Everybody is talking about how we can regenerate the economy, and the stuff that we are doing on green energy and renewables will also create loads of jobs and regenerate our economy—[Interruption.] I hear some Opposition Members sniggering and laughing.”
