Leaving the Earth a Better Place

We inherit this great planet from our parents and the generations before them. Then, in concert with the surrounding culture, our elders teach us how to care for the land and the sea, ourselves and each other. They model ways of being in relationship with every other expression of life on earth. But whether they act with care or carelessness, compassion or cruelty, generosity or greed, we have the ability to choose our own way of relating with the planet and her inhabitants. From our first breath here to our very last, we will find infinite opportunities to influence our environment for the better. We can decide now to act with intention in order to leave this amazing planet brighter and more beautiful than when we arrived.

If we enjoy environmental activism, we might feel moved to clean up beaches or to plant trees. But we needn’t feel limited in our ability to contribute positively. There are many ways to leave a legacy of love. We might begin by radiating affirmative thoughts and feelings about how magnificent the earth truly is. We could create and tend a special garden, one that provides an abundance of food and herbs for ourselves and our loved ones, or one filled with sweet-smelling flowers to uplift our hearts. We may even honor the earth simply by trying to be the best person we can be while we are here. Such good will can have a domino effect, inspiring others to contribute in their own way.

We spend our lifetimes being nourished and enlivened by the rain, sun, soil, and wind. Our experience is blessed by other living beings, from plants and insects to birds and humans. We receive so much; giving back just naturally feels good. When we live our lives with the intention of leaving this temporary home a better place for generations to come, we are perhaps leaving behind the best gift of all. (Daily OM)

Protective Light in Dark Times

There are times when we know of someone who is in great need and wants help, but we may feel at a loss about how best to assist them. It is in these moments that we can ask for help in surrounding the person with support and protection. Whether this means turning to an already established community, such as a service organization, or gathering support from diverse sources, a group of people can be brought together to help an individual or an entire community. It doesn’t always take money to help someone either — cooking, cleaning, driving, fundraising, or offering emotional support are all valuable and have the added benefit of the human touch. In any case, the universe sends angels in the form of willing friends or strangers to surround those in need with the warmth of compassion.

Some people may have difficulty accepting or even recognizing aid when it appears in unexpected guises, from unlikely sources. All we can do is follow our inner guidance, give when we are moved to do so, and shine our light to the best of our ability. As we join our energy with those in the circle, we become part of something that is larger and more powerful than the individuals within it.

When we act as part of a community of service like this, we’re reminded that we are not only assisting an individual or select group in the moment, but also serving the greater good. We’re creating a better world and can rest assured that help will be there for us as well. As we offer our own light to the collective glow to aid someone in a time of darkness, all of us become brighter. We can live every day from this place of radiance, knowing the freedom from fear and worry that allows us to receive and share the protective and supportive light of life....<<<Read More>>>...

Not Knowing Is Okay

Sometimes, we may find ourselves wishing we knew what our lives were going to look like, or what gifts and challenges were going to be presented to us in the coming months or years. We may want to know if the relationship we’re in now will go the distance or if our goals will be realized. Perhaps we feel like we need help making a decision and want to know which choice will work out best. We may consult psychics, tarot cards, our dreams, and many other sources in the hopes of finding out what the future holds. Usually, at most, we may catch glimpses. And even though we think we’d like to know the whole story in all its details, the truth is that we would probably be overwhelmed and exhausted if we knew everything that is going to happen to us.

Just consider your life as you’ve lived it up to this point. If you’re like most of us, you’ve probably done and faced much more than you ever could have imagined. If someone had told you as a child of all the jobs and relationships you would experience, along with each one’s inherent ups and downs, you’d have become overwhelmed. With your head full of information about the future, you would have had a very hard time experiencing your life in the present moment, which is where everything actually happens.

In many ways, not knowing what the future has in store brings out in us the qualities we need to grow. For example, it would have been difficult to commit yourself to certain people or projects if you knew they wouldn’t ultimately work out. Yet, it was because of your commitment to see them through that you experienced the lessons necessary to become your best self. Looking back on your life, you would likely be hard-pressed to say that anything in your past shouldn’t have happened. In fact, your most challenging experiences with their inevitable lessons may have ultimately brought you the greatest rewards. Not knowing the future keeps us just where we need to be — fully committed and in the present moment....<<<Read More>>>...

Do You Practice Self-Care?

Our true nature is to love ourselves, yet we often forget. Like a muscle, it needs to be flexed and strengthened, and one of the most direct ways to do this is through acts of self-care. When we tune into our body, mind, and soul, we become fully present within ourselves — and to our needs.

But self-care can be hard to practice. It often seems much easier to think about other people’s needs before our own, to prioritize caring for our friends, family, spouse, children, pets — or even our possessions like a house or car — above our own care. Why is that? The joy of making someone else happy is immensely rewarding. Taking care of our belongings can give us satisfaction. What we might not always remember is that self-care is not an indulgence, but a necessity — how can we be there for those we love if we’re not taking care of ourselves?

If you’ve been feeling a little wobbly with self-care, try this simple practice. Take a moment to sit quietly and ask yourself: “What’s one easy thing I can do now that would feel good?” Maybe it’s enjoying a moment of silence. Maybe it’s sipping a comforting cup of tea. Whatever it is, do it with your full acceptance and presence. Think of self-care as an invitation to be kind to yourself and then take that positive, rejuvenating energy forward with you into your interactions and experiences. Start small and go from there, with little daily acts of self-love that will nourish your soul. (Daily OM)
