Is Scottish Football Fixed?

 The idea that Scottish football might be fixed is current north of the border after a sensational evening of Premiership football on Wednesday night. League leaders Heart of Midlothian (‘Hearts’) were beating Falkirk 3-0, but saw the Holy Grail of their first league title in 66 years (or one hand on it anyway) snatched away in the 97th minute thanks to a controversial VAR decision at the game being played simultaneously between Celtic and Motherwell. Many believe there is more than just wretched luck at play.

With literally seconds remaining in the Hearts-Falkirk game, the Motherwell-Celtic game at 2-2, and Hearts fans in a state of intense anxiety mingled with incipient ecstasy, the ball was headed clear of the Motherwell box by winger Sam Nicholson. But did it also strike his hand, which was close to his forehead? Referee John Beaton didn’t initially think so but was summoned to the touchline by the VAR assistant Andrew Dallas. After some deliberation, Beaton awarded the spot kick to Celtic, which was duly dispatched, turning the title race on its head. Liverpool 1 v 2 Man Utd

 Harry Maguire's late header secured Manchester United's first win at Anfield in nearly a decade and inflicted Liverpool's fourth successive defeat.

Cody Gakpo's strike with 12 minutes left looked like it would end Liverpool's losing streak, only for Maguire to head beyond Liverpool keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili six minutes from time.

Gakpo scored from close range after earlier hitting the woodwork three times, but Ruben Amorim's side continued to press forward, with Maguire providing a dramatic finale.

United stunned Liverpool by taking the lead inside two minutes, although it was a moment shrouded in controversy, referee Michael Oliver letting the play go on even though Alexis Mac Allister was lying prone with a head injury after being accidentally elbowed by team-mate Virgil van Dijk.

Bryan Mbeumo was not waiting around, applying the finish past Mamardashvili, deputising for the injured Alisson.

In an end-to-end encounter, United captain Bruno Fernandes wasted an opportunity to double their lead, shooting wide with the goal at his mercy, while Liverpool's fortunes were summed up by Gakpo hitting the woodwork twice before the break and once more in the second half in front of The Kop.  Manchester United struck twice in the closing minutes to stun Manchester City in a dramatic derby conclusion at Etihad Stadium.

Josko Gvardiol's first-half header looked to be giving City victory in a largely dismal clash until United staged a remarkable turnaround to give new manager Ruben Amorim a landmark win early in his reign.

Amad Diallo was United's star performer, winning the 88th minute penalty that saw Bruno Fernandes equalise after the youngster was fouled by Matheus Nunes.

As City tried to regroup, Diallo then pounced in the closing seconds of normal time to score from a tight angle.

It was a rich reward for United boss Amorim after he ruthlessly axed Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from his match day squad, but then suffered an early blow when Mason Mount was struck down by his latest injury, limping off after only 14 minutes.

Opportunities were at a premium in a game largely made up of desperate mediocrity, United looking to have wasted their best opportunity to equalise 17 minutes from time when Fernandes raced clear on to Rasmus Hojlund's pass, only to lift his finish over the onrushing Ederson but wide.

 Manchester United and beleaguered manager Erik ten Hag defied the odds and their critics to pull off a stunning FA Cup final victory over hot favourites Manchester City at Wembley.

Ten Hag went into this Manchester derby final with the growing expectation that he will be sacked by United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, irrespective of the outcome.

If Ten Hag is to be dismissed, he will be going out on the back of the finest day of his two-year reign and United’s finest moment for years following a performance that was virtually unrecognisable from the dismal fare they have served up this season.

United’s triumph, which denied Premier League champions City a second successive domestic double, was built on an outstanding first-half display that brought goals from Alejadro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Garnacho was the beneficiary of a mix-up between City keeper Stefan Ortega and Josko Gvardiol as he was left with an open goal on the half-hour while Mainoo crowned a sweeping move with a calm finish from Bruno Fernandes’ delicate touch nine minutes later.

City inevitably applied pressure in the second half, Erling Haaland hitting the frame of the goal, United keeper Andre Onana saving superbly from Kyle Walker and Julian Alvarez missing a great chance.

Blackpool Win To Boost Survival Hopes

 Leeds United loan man Ian Poveda give Blackpool hope of escaping the drop in the Championship as he hit a late winner at Birmingham.

The Blackpool substitute was set up by Morgan Rogers to net the only goal of the game from close range just 12 minutes after coming on.

That leaves the Tangerines now just three points adrift of safety with two games left - but they might have to win both, at home to Millwall and away to Norwich to give themselves a chance.

Blackpool are now three points adrift of Neil Warnock's 21st-placed Huddersfield, who have a game in hand.

Both sides had shared five goalless draws this season, including the one between Blackpool and Blues at Bloomfield Road back on 10 December.

And this one looked like it may become another blank after the two sides managed just one shot on target between them before the break.

John Eustace's Blues, now safe from relegation themselves, looked more of a threat after the restart.

But they were made to pay for a dreadful mix-up between home defender Kevin Long and stand-in goalkeeper Neil Etheridge on 74 minutes which allowed Poveda to knock in the only goal.

It brought Blackpool's first away win since October, at Coventry, and Poveda his second only-goal-of-the-game matchwinner, having also scored in a 1-0 home win over Stoke City in February.

 Manchester United took control of their last-16 Europa League tie against Real Betis with a commanding first-leg victory at Old Trafford.

Marcus Rashford's thumping early strike put the hosts ahead and, while Ayoze Perez levelled for Betis, Erik ten Hag's side created several excellent chances and were worthy winners.

Antony curled in a superb second to put United back in front, before Bruno Fernandes headed home Luke Shaw's corner in front of the Stretford End to extend their lead.

 Liverpool delivered the complete performance and Mohamed Salah became the club's record Premier League goalscorer as Manchester United were overwhelmed at a joyous Anfield.

United's renaissance under manager Erik ten Hag already has the tangible reward of the Carabao Cup but Liverpool unleashed a brutal reality check on their progress with a severe thrashing.

Liverpool took control of what had been a tight game, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford missing presentable chances, when former Old Trafford target Cody Gakpo applied a smooth finish to Andy Robertson's perfect pass two minutes before the break.

The second half was a tale of sheer joy for Liverpool and unrelenting misery for United, starting after 47 minutes when Darwin Nunez's header diverted Harvey Elliott's driven cross past goalkeeper David de Gea.

Salah bamboozled Lisandro Martinez to play in Gakpo for another classy finish three minutes later before the Egyptian resumed his long-time role of United tormentor by getting on the scoresheet himself.

Salah ended a swift counter-attack by lashing a finish high past De Gea and the rout continued as Nunez flashed another header in from Jordan Henderson's cross.

Salah then scrambled in the sixth to become Liverpool's highest Premier League goalscorer with 129, passing Robbie Fowler. He is also Liverpool's highest marksman against Manchester United with 12 - and 10 of those have come in his past five encounters.

[BBC Sport]: England's 55-year wait to reach a major men's final is over at last after victory against Denmark in the Euro 2020 last four, on a night of nerve-shredding tension then unconfined joy at Wembley.

Gareth Southgate's side were on a mission to travel one step further than any England side has done since the 1966 World Cup final win against West Germany and they finally achieved the long-cherished goal as they came from behind to beat Denmark after extra time.

In front of 66,000 fans and in a frenzied, thunderous atmosphere this newer Wembley has not experienced before, England battled their way out of adversity to secure a meeting with Italy in the Euro 2020 final at the same venue on Sunday (20:00 BST kick-off).

How England had to fight for victory against this steely Denmark with an inspired keeper in Kasper Schmeichel, especially after conceding their first goal of the tournament to Mikkel Damsgaard's stunning free-kick after 30 minutes.

England, crucially, replied quickly as Denmark captain Simon Kjaer turned in Bukayo Saka's threatening cross six minutes before the break.

Schmeichel was Denmark's hero as England sought the winner, saving brilliantly from Harry Maguire and Harry Kane as the game went into extra time and the prospect of penalties loomed large.

The moment the nation has waited for so long effectively arrived with Wembley's giant screens showing 103 minutes and captain Kane standing over a penalty after Raheem Sterling had been fouled by Joakim Maehle.

In keeping with England's long and tortuous history, it was not straightforward as the normally ice-cool Kane saw an awful penalty saved by Schmeichel - but the rebound fell at his feet for him to score.

Wembley went wild with deafening noise and wild celebrations as finally, after all the years of hurt, England have the golden opportunity to finally claim a major crown on Sunday.

[Blackpool Evening Gazette]: The Seasiders recovered from a horror start, when they fell behind after just 48 seconds following Ollie Turton’s freak own goal.

But Neil Critchley’s men produced a magnificent response, eventually levelling through Dougall before half-time.

From this point onwards, the Seasiders had an impressive level of control in the game, edging their noses in front through Dougall’s second of the game.

Pool saw out the remainder of the Wembley showpiece with minimal fuss, clinching a return to England’s second tier after a six-year absence.

League One play-offs: Blackpool 3-3 Oxford (agg 6-3) - Seasiders book place in final

[BBC Sport]: Blackpool progress in a thriller, all thanks in the end to their superb first-leg display at Oxford.

The U's came to Bloomfield Road with hopes of upsetting the apple cart and did a great of job of bringing chaos, bringing excitement.

They kept fighting, scoring goals from Matty Taylor, Rob Atkinson and Olamide Shodipo to keep the home side on their toes.

That said, Blackpool were never in danger, and their goals from Elliot Emnbleton, Kenny Dougall and Jerry Yates are enough to keep a comfortable three-goal cushion.

Coronavirus: Premier League set to push to complete the season

[BBC Sport]: The Premier League is expected to reiterate its commitment to completing the season in Thursday's emergency board meeting held via conference call.

All games have been postponed until at least 4 April because of coronavirus.

But with the pandemic set to continue much longer than that, the league is expected to acknowledge there will be no action for several weeks after that.

The postponement of Euro 2020 has opened up a window for domestic leagues to be completed by the end of June.

But clubs are unlikely to put a definitive date on when they hope to resume the season, given the UK government has effectively banned sports events by advising against mass gatherings.

It is understood that if those restrictions on mass gatherings are not lifted, officials are open to the idea of staging matches behind closed doors in order to complete fixtures.

[BBC Sport]: Manchester United dented neighbours Manchester City's Premier League title hopes with a superb counter-attacking victory in the Manchester derby.

City stay third but are now 14 points behind leaders Liverpool, who won at Bournemouth. United move up to fifth.

Marcus Rashford's first-half penalty, which was awarded after a VAR check, put United ahead.

Anthony Martial scored the second with a left-foot shot and Nicolas Otamendi replied with a late header for City.

United's win was no more than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side deserved after they repeatedly carved the hosts' defence apart in the opening stages.

Some incisive play saw Rashford hit the crossbar, while Daniel James and Martial could have added to the visitors' tally.

Gabriel Jesus missed an excellent chance to score for the City - heading wide from six yards - as they lost two home matches in a season for the first time under manager Pep Guardiola.
