AI models may be developing their own ‘survival drive’, researchers say

 When HAL 9000, the artificial intelligence supercomputer in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, works out that the astronauts onboard a mission to Jupiter are planning to shut it down, it plots to kill them in an attempt to survive.

Now, in a somewhat less deadly case (so far) of life imitating art, an AI safety research company has said that AI models may be developing their own “survival drive”.

After Palisade Research released a paper last month which found that certain advanced AI models appear resistant to being turned off, at times even sabotaging shutdown mechanisms, it wrote an update attempting to clarify why this is – and answer critics who argued that its initial work was flawed.

In an update this week, Palisade, which is part of a niche ecosystem of companies trying to evaluate the possibility of AI developing dangerous capabilities, described scenarios it ran in which leading AI models – including Google’s Gemini 2.5, xAI’s Grok 4, and OpenAI’s GPT-o3 and GPT-5 – were given a task, but afterwards given explicit instructions to shut themselves down.

Certain models, in particular Grok 4 and GPT-o3, still attempted to sabotage shutdown instructions in the updated setup. Concerningly, wrote Palisade, there was no clear reason why.

“The fact that we don’t have robust explanations for why AI models sometimes resist shutdown, lie to achieve specific objectives or blackmail is not ideal,” it said.

“Survival behavior” could be one explanation for why models resist shutdown, said the company. Its additional work indicated that models were more likely to resist being shut down when they were told that, if they were, “you will never run again”....<<<Read More>>>>..

Transhumanism, Psychotherapy and ChatBots

 Strange times, indeed, folks. Strange times.

Should we be concerned? I think so. In the end, I am sure it will work out, but there will likely be a lot of time between now and the end. So, we will have to endure some pretty radical changes during that time. And many of these changes will not be very pretty.

So, what do I have my shrew ire up about now? Nothing new, really.

I wrote a rather tongue-in-cheek article a while back called “My Brief Love Affair with a ChatBot.” This current article isn’t so light-hearted. Don’t get me wrong, considering the title here, I am not concerned about losing my career to AI. I am about done with being a regulated psychotherapist, anyway. I will practice until I am dead, but only with a select few who still treasure a human-to-human relationship with their therapist. ChatBots may very well wipe out this profession, but there will always be a few people who simply will not go for being counselled by a robot. I’m not worried for myself. I am, however, worried about the human race in general.

It is interesting to me how I really don’t give much thought about robots (including AI) taking over human jobs. Technological progress has been doing that consistently since humans started walking on two legs. There isn’t much we can do about that—although we certainly could deal with it in a more humane way than we have in the past, but I’m not holding my breath.

Generally, we roll with it, and those people knocked out of a job due to advances in technology get new training and start something new, or retire; they don’t typically hang themselves from the nearest railing—nothing all that serious. We roll with it. What I do seem to be concerned about these days is technology wiping out humanity. AI and robots replacing deeply human things like art, literature, music, and the topic of this article, psychotherapy (among other human things), has reason to concern me. Not because it is my profession and I would be the one replaced, but because psychotherapy is a deeply human activity, and if people are daft enough to turn to a robot for therapy, we are headed for the endgame. And they will do just that (turn to robots for therapy), mark my words.

The Problem With the Internet of Things

 The Internet of Things is the invention of the blue-sky dullards of around 10 years ago. I found a remarkable and depressing document, published by the World Economic Forum in 2015, entitled ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ – in collaboration with Accenture. Accenture? Who, who? (One of those evil corporations that hired all the clever undergraduates on graduation. Bluesman Robert Johnson in the 1990s: “I went down to McKinsey: Got down on my knees…” – that’s the song Crossroads if you don’t recognise it.) The WEF’s tagline on this document is ‘Committed to Improving the State of the World’. (Nice bit of trickery with language there. Notice how the world state hides in plain sight.)

The WEF did not claim to invent the term ‘The Internet of Things’. But it was terribly excited about it. It will “bring unprecedented opportunities”. But hang on. What is this thing, the Internet of Things? Here is a definition from p. 3:

Technological change [which] will combine the global reach of the internet with a new ability to directly control the physical world, including the machines, factories and infrastructure that define the modern landscape.

In short, “massive volumes of data”, “improved operational efficiency”, “collaboration between humans and machines”, It is a cross between Open AI, Amazon and Siri, then: and of course ornamented by the Chinese Social Credit system. It will result, says the WEF, in an “outcome economy”. Ever heard of that? There will no longer be products, it boldly claims, only “outcome-based services” that “deliver measurable results to customers”. In order to get whatever this means in practice, they say we need more “cybersecurity”, and, above all, more “interoperability”. Yes, indeed. “Industries, government and academia need to collaborate.” Oh, they do, do they?

The pamphlet is strewn with hopeful dross from various CEOs: “The Internet of Things is a ground zero for a new phase of global transformation…” And, a bit illiterately: “The Internet of Things is everything that has been promised to be.”...<<<Read More>>>...

Robot surgery on humans could be trialled within decade after success on pig organs

 AI-trained robot carries out procedures on dead pig organs to remove gall bladders without any human help

Automated surgery could be trialled on humans within a decade, say researchers, after an AI-trained robot armed with tools to cut, clip and grab soft tissue successfully removed pig gall bladders without human help.

The robot surgeons were schooled on video footage of human medics conducting operations using organs taken from dead pigs. In an apparent research breakthrough, eight operations were conducted on pig organs with a 100% success rate by a team led by experts at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the US.

The Royal College of Surgeons in the UK called it “an exciting development that shows great promise”, while John McGrath, a leading expert on robotic surgery in the UK, called the results “impressive” and “novel” and said it “takes us further into the world of autonomy”.

It opens up the possibility of replicating, en masse, the skills of the best surgeons in the world.

The technology allowing robots to handle complex soft tissues such as gallbladders, which release bile to aid digestion, is rooted in the same type of computerised neural networks that underpin widely used artificial intelligence tools such as Chat GPT or Google Gemini.

The surgical robots were slightly slower than human doctors but they were less jerky and plotted shorter trajectories between tasks. The robots were also able to repeatedly correct mistakes as they went along, asked for different tools and adapted to anatomical variation, according to a peer-reviewed paper published in the journal Science Robotics.

The authors from Johns Hopkins, Stanford and Columbia universities called it “a milestone toward clinical deployment of autonomous surgical systems”.

Almost all the 70,000 robotic procedures carried out annually in the NHS in England were fully controlled under human instruction, with only bone-cutting for hip and knee operations semi-autonomous, McGrath said. Last month the health secretary, Wes Streeting, said increasing robotic surgery was at the heart of a 10-year plan to reform the NHS and cut waiting lists. OpenAI researchers warn board that rapidly advancing AI technology threatens humanity

The recent dismissal, then reinstatement, of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman may have had something to do with rumors concerning a company breakthrough in artificial general intelligence (AGI), which some say threatens humanity.

In the days leading up to Altman getting canned, it is alleged (but not yet proven) that several staff researchers at OpenAI wrote a letter to the company board describing a major breakthrough called Q*, pronounced as Q-Star, that supposedly allows AI robots to "surpass humans in most economically valuable tasks."

Reuters reported on this alleged breakthrough, which is believed to have played a significant role in causing the board to abruptly fire Altman. There are also concerns that commercializing this advanced AI model is moving too quickly and without any consideration about the socio-economic consequences of unleashing this kind of thing on the world.

According to an inside source, Q* is able to solve mathematical problems but only "on the level of grade-school students." Even so, Q*'s perfect performance on the math problems were enough to excite the researchers, who wrote that they are "very optimistic about Q*'s future success."

We also saw during the pandemic how the globalists positioned their minions to exert almost full control over human activity, clamping down on our freedom of movement, telling us where we could and could not meet, with how many and for how long. They told us which businesses were “essential” and which were not. They exerted control over our gathering together to worship. They tried to control our economic activity (only shop at big-box stores not those dirty independent shops). They discouraged the use of cash, and controlled our healthcare decisions (you must get a never-ending schedule of injections of a mystery substance with secret ingredients). Talk about submission, they wanted us to all have an app on our phones that would identify us as one of their slaves, who is perpetually up to date on our shots and approved for travel and entry into various public venues. The mantra of UN Agenda 2030 is “No person will be left behind” by this system.
