What we drive, how we heat our homes, what we eat, how much water we use: every modern activity increases industrial CO2 emissions in a manner not dissimilar to air conditioning. Do all such intimate, local decisions therefore necessitate governmental oversight and regulation? And if so, what freedoms can possibly remain?

The roots of such worrisome totalising can be traced in the more academic realm to the 1960s and 1970s, with the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Paul Ehrlich’s the Population Bomb and the Club of Rome’s the Limits to Growth. More distal influences, such as Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto of 1848, also merit consideration, as we shall see.

There is another source, however, unmatched in its combination of scientific pretension, charged emotional tone, policy impact and mass appeal: former Vice President Al Gore’s 2006 documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which this year marks its 20th anniversary.

More than any other single work, this glossy, visually dramatic production translated the abstractions of climate modelling into a compelling, emotionally charged narrative – one that struck fear into the hearts of tens of millions. It did so by framing mankind’s industrial activity and consequent increase in CO2 production as the driver of a truly dangerous increase in global temperature. It did so by warning of severe and impending ecological devastation and economic disruption. Data from the 75th edition of the annual ‘Statistical Review of World Energy‘ will surprise only those ignoring the facts: The world continues to depend massively on fossil fuels [more correctly, hydrocarbon fuels]. Solar and wind technologies, while expanding, still lag ever-rising energy demand, which last year reached a record 600 exajoules. (That’s 600 quintillion joules, where a joule is equal to the work necessary to create one watt of power for one second.)

Of total primary energy consumption, 86% came from fossil fuels – oil at 33.5%; coal, 27.6%; and natural gas, 25.1%. Accounting for just 3% were solar and wind, which are heavily promoted by the European Commission over the much-demonised hydrocarbons.

UK Net Zero policy aims at balancing the production and removal of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), methane and nitrous oxide by 2050. The primary greenhouse gas from transport is CO2 produced by burning fuels containing carbon such as petrol and diesel in conventional internal combustion vehicles. The entire Vehicle Excise Duty regime pivots on this single metric. Current Government transport policy is aimed at reducing CO2 emissions to help meet Net Zero targets. In addition, Government documents also mention as objectives reducing local pollution from transport, improving connectivity across Britain, growing the economy by enhancing the transport network and increasing the global impact of the UK to boost influence and maximise trade. However, these other objectives are not clearly prioritised, the costs and challenges of implementation are not specified and flagrant contradictions between these different aims are simply ignored.

The scale of the challenge of ‘decarbonising’ transport is very large. Transport accounts for 26% of total UK emissions, which is 0.27% of total global emissions. As a rough guide from Government statistics, the major contributing sectors to transport emissions are road transport (70%), aviation (20%) and marine (8%). In Great Britain, there are around 42 million registered road vehicles – 34 million cars, five million vans and 0.8 million heavy goods vehicles and buses. Of these vehicles, as of March 2025 only 1.5 million were pure battery electric vehicles. Burnham’s Net Zero Secretary Wants to Raise Tax to Stop People Flying

 Miatta Fahnbulleh advocated frequent-flyer levies that would add hundreds of pounds to the annual costs of regular travellers.

Now the Energy Secretary, she called for the taxes while chief executive of the New Economics Foundation think tank between 2017 and 2023.

During her time there, the think tank proposed in 2021 adding an escalating levy to tickets which would increase for every subsequent flight taken within a year, replacing the current Air Passenger Duty system.

Her appointment on Monday is likely to raise concerns that some of her previous policy proposals may be taken forward.

The think tank’s work has been incorporated into Labour policymaking in the past, including work on green industrial strategy and energy.

Richard Holden MP, the Shadow Transport Secretary, said families were already paying some of the highest flight taxes in the world “just to get away for a well-earned break”. “But Andy Burnham’s pick as Labour’s Energy Secretary wants to pile another tax on top,” he said.

He added British families were already being “taxed through the roof” and claimed the new taxes on air travel represented a punishment for “anyone who dares to fly for a holiday”.

Under the frequent-flyer tax proposal, the first flight taken by any individual in a given year would be exempt. The proposal was designed in part to keep costs neutral for lower-earners, who typically travel less, and to also protect family holidays. However, costs would then ratchet up in increments.

Under one model, for example, the tax on the first flight would be £0, the second flight £25, and each additional increment would increase by £10 thereafter (£35, £45, £55) for each subsequent flight. By the 10th flight the total green tax bill would come to £585.

The costs would be even higher for those travelling for business, representing a significant cost to companies.

It would be felt most by higher earners, who fly more, with models suggesting the highest 20% of earners would cut flying by around 30%, while the lowest 20% would be unaffected....<<<Read More>>>...

UK’s Net Zero costs are soaring out of control

When the National Energy System Operator (“NESO”) produced their plan to deliver Ed Miliband’s Clean Power 2030 (“CP2030”) goal, they said that all the planned transmission grid expansion works must be built on time and that “involves twice as much in the next five years as was built in total over the last decade.” From the outset, delivering on that part of CP2030 was always a tall order.

I have been contacted by several people over the past few weeks highlighting several issues that indicate these ambitious plans (some may say fantastical) will probably not be achieved. For those of us sceptical of Net Zero generally and Clean Power 2030 in particular, this represents both good news and bad news.

First, the good news: Slipping schedules means they will not spend all the money earmarked for grid expansion, which ought to mean our bills do not go up as much as feared. The bad news is that, based on the limited data available, it looks like the costs of this work are soaring out of control.

 Throughout history, successful engineering projects are the legacy to us of the age in which they were carried out. We thank unknown engineers for the pyramids and the remains of ancient Athens and Rome. We thank Brunel for our railways, tunnels and bridges. Whether we like him or not, we thank Elon Musk, so far, for PayPal, cheaper access to space and electric vehicles.

Who will we thank for the green nirvana? The windmills of today are modern versions of those that powered industry several centuries ago. Within a few decades of the introduction of James Watt’s steam engine to assist the annual harvest in Europe, those old windmills ceased turning, for here was a new, flexible, portable and always ready-to-go form of energy. Nothing that has happened in recent decades has reduced that difference in utility. The laws of physics prevent it. We have become used to accessing energy when and where we want it. In the absence – now or in prospect – of any technology to store electricity at a massive scale for weeks, we need a 100% back-up capability of coal, oil, gas and nuclear electricity for when the wind does not blow and the sun does not shine. 

A forced priority to use wind and solar, sweetened by vast subsides (for they would not be spontaneously adopted by the free market) means that we have to run two grids side by side: one intermittent, the other firm. The last 20 years have seen only wasteful addition and some unwise subtractions, such as blowing up coal-fired power stations for show. We would not have been able to evolve our modern society if we had relied all along on wind and solar forms of energy. Just as we can’t buck the market because it bites back, so too we can’t buck the engineering principles of power generation for they too bite back. ...<<<Read More>>>...

Miliband Willing to Approve North Sea Oil to Land Job as Chancellor

Ed Miliband wants to approve drilling in the North Sea to calm market jitters about his possible appointment as Chancellor and prove he is no Net Zero “zealot”.

The Energy Secretary has privately signalled his willingness to grant consent for drilling at the Jackdaw gas field but cannot publicly confirm the move until a consultation closes next month.

Jackdaw, off the coast of Aberdeen, is one of two licences in the North Sea currently held in legal limbo. The other site, Rosebank, would produce oil to be sold in a global market, but Jackdaw would be able to provide enough fuel to heat 1.4 million British homes this winter.

Miliband is keen to show the markets he would be willing to put Britain’s economic growth ahead of his Net Zero ambitions if he became Chancellor amid reports more wealthy people are planning to flee Britain if he moves into No. 11.

Andy Burnham, who is set to become Prime Minister next Monday, has already said he is “open minded” about North Sea drilling to help combat Britain’s cost-of-living crisis.

Miliband Overrules His Inspectors to Approve Britain’s Second-Largest Solar Farm

 Ed Miliband has approved Britain’s second-largest solar farm on 4,000 acres of prime farmland after overruling opposition from his own inspectors. The Telegraph has the story.

The Energy Secretary on Wednesday said he had granted planning permission to the One Earth Solar Farm development to be built on prime farmland across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

It comes despite a recommendation to block the development from Miliband’s own planning inspectors.

They warned that the scheme would be destructive for the environment, would put historic structures at risk, damage the health and well-being of local people and cause transport problems.

The controversial decision marks the third large solar farm approved by Miliband in recent days, coming a week after he backed two other large solar farms, Pear Tree Hill in East Yorkshire and Dean Moor in West Cumbria.

Sceptics suggest the Energy Secretary is trying to sign off as many such developments as he can before Andy Burnham takes office and potentially moves him to a new position.

One Earth has been cleared for construction on 4,000 acres of prime farmland near Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood and West Lindsey district council areas.

Besides the thousands of Chinese-made solar panels, the scheme will also include giant batteries to store surplus electricity.

It is set to be the second largest solar farm in the UK after the Springwell Solar Farm in Lincolnshire, an 800-megawatt project approved by the Government in April.

Confirming his decision, Miliband said: “The only way to have energy security is if we take a pro-growth approach to building more clean energy in Britain. For two years that is exactly what this Government has done.”

However, the new scheme is controversial because it will see several rural communities largely surrounded by solar panels covering what were once fields and hedgerows.

Met Office Claims Another Temperature Record – in an Overgrown Backyard

 Last Monday, the Daily Sceptic revealed how the Met Office claims of “record temperatures” during the recent heatwave were more likely the result of poor siting than climate change. The highest temperature occurred at one of its Class 5 junk stations, Santon Downham in Norfolk.

The same day, the Met Office belatedly discovered an even higher temperature during the hot spell three days earlier. A private back garden in Lingwood near Norwich had, we were assured, recorded a temperature of 37.7C.

Who’s funding the campaign to push the ruinous net-zero agenda in the UK?

 A network of foundations, research groups and policy shops, often funded through foreign channels, is behind the push for net zero in the UK.

The Spectator calls this network the “Dark Green lobby.”

“[The Dark Green lobby] has been astonishingly successful in shaping policy, controlling debate and overruling elected governments in the courts. It has prevented the exploration of oil and gas in the North Sea, kept energy prices high and made us ever more dependent on Chinese technology,” the outlet said.

The Dark Green actor with the most influence is the Netherlands-based European Climate Foundation (“ECF”), which supports “700+ partner organisations” to “broaden political and public support for net zero.”

“The ECF hopes to ‘embed climate action in robust, future-proof frameworks that withstand political change’. In other words, sod the voters,” The Spectator said.

Dale Vince: Ed Miliband Has Turned Net Zero Toxic

 Green energy tycoon Dale Vince has blamed Ed Miliband for the “toxification of Net Zero” and branded him unfit to become Chancellor. The Telegraph has more.

The Labour donor accused the Energy Secretary of putting “ideology before the economy” and questioned whether he had a grasp of “even the basic notion of value for money”.

Miliband’s spending record in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) demonstrated his economic incompetence, Vince told the Telegraph.

In particular, the green energy entrepreneur criticised the decision to commit tens of billions of pounds to heat pumps and carbon capture technology, the latter of which remains largely unproven on a global scale.

“It’s about economic competence,” he said. “It’s about having an understanding of even the basic notion of value for money. I question whether he has that when you look at spending decisions like carbon capture and storage.

“It’s madly uneconomic so this makes me question whether he’s putting ideology in front of [the] economy. We need something else from a Chancellor and someone who is more business-like.”

UK’s National Grid 2011: Power will have to be rationed in the UK because wind turbines will never provide enough energy

15 years ago, in 2011, the chief executive of National Grid said that “families would have to get used to only using power when it was available, rather than constantly” when the UK switched from gas to relying on wind turbines to power the nation.

I was talking to a friend this morning, who tells me that some folks, broadly in the conservative sphere, are just now catching on to the fact that the “Smart Grid” (ho ho ho) is going to be able to switch off your appliances.

I tried explaining this to people at the 2012 Cheltenham Science Festival, which accidentally invited me to debate. They didn’t ask me back.

Renewable Energy Will Impoverish Humanity

The modern world and the rich, free lives it brought are both dying in Britain. Energy consumption has fallen by about 30% since 2005 and electricity consumption by about 23%, both due to climate policy costs, and particularly that of renewable energy, subsidies to which amount to £25 billion a year, 40% of the total cost of electricity supply. Insofar as we are maintaining our standard of living, we do so by borrowing and importing the goods of fossil- and nuclear-fuelled Asia. That borrowing cannot continue indefinitely, and an abrupt reversal in distressed circumstances is all but certain, with the consequence that wind and solar are not only a threat to British prosperity, but to any realistic hope of reducing emissions.

To get out of this mess we must remind ourselves of the relationship between fuel quality and wealth, and act in accordance with those realities.

Stand anywhere in the world and starting from your skin look out and around you. Even in the remotest wildlands the environment will have been modified to suit your interests. Layers of intricate textile shield you against weather. In your backpack you have a container with pure water, clean and concentrated food, and in your pocket an electronic device that can send and receive signals as part of a worldwide network. The hills may be bathed in brilliant sunshine and clear air but also in manmade electromagnetic fields permitting you to establish your location, to summon help, to interrogate databases to identify any unusual flower or bird, to call your friends to let them know of your discovery or distribute photographs....<<<Read More>>>....

Miliband Forces Wind Firms to Back Unions or Lose Subsidies

 Ed Miliband has forced wind power companies to support trade unions by threatening to cut their subsidies. The Telegraph has the story.

Dozens of businesses supplying the offshore wind industry have been pressured into adopting pro-union rules after the Energy Secretary warned he would reduce their access to taxpayer funds unless they complied.

It means the companies will be required to meet certain requirements in the Employment Rights Act months before they are rolled out nationwide, including a new right for trade unions to enter their workplaces.

They will also have to provide unions with information identifying “major contractors” across the supply chain where “reasonably practicable”, and actively engage representatives in projects that concern them.

At least 37 companies have agreed to the commitments set out in Miliband’s new Offshore Wind Fair Work Charter – after the Government threatened to block their applications for clean energy subsidies if they failed to comply.

The Tories accused Miliband of risking an increase in energy bills by “effectively forcing the offshore wind industry to accept unionisation”.

In its flagship Employment Rights Act, passed last year, Labour introduced several measures aimed at boosting the presence of trade unions in the workplace.
