The Enochian Language

The Magical language used in certain magick rituals is Enochian (Enoch), a language thought to be older than Sanskrit, with a sound grammatical and syntactical basis. It resembles Arabic in some sounds and Hebrew and Latin in others. It first appeared in print in 1659 in a biography of John Dee. The barbaric tonal qualities of this language gives it a truley magical effect wich cannot be described.

In the year of 1581 through the extraordinary efforts of Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelly, the secrets that were lost with the patriarch of the Bible known as Enoch were returned to those who thirst for the knowledge of Light. Dee kept close records of their intensive work. Although some of Dee's work has been lost, much of it is to be found in Sloane Documents 3188,3189, 3191, 3677, and 3679. These documents are to be found at the British Museum in London.

One of the most important breakthroughs in the rediscovery of these lost secrets was an entirely new language. This language contained its own grammar and syntax. It is an Angelic language often referred to as "Enochian." Dee and Kelly used great care and effort when receiving the lost knowledge of Enoch. The dictating Angel was the Great Angel Ave. Many hours were spent bringing forth the information by Dee and Kelly. Often times sessions would last 8 to 10 hours a day. Some of the material was actually dictated backwards by the Angel so as not to invoke dangerous forces of power.

The beginnings of Enochian Magic were coming into place, but the information was just information. It was not a system of any usable value. John Dee & the Enochian Apocalypse

New Dawn Magazine: Doctor John Dee (1527-1609) remains one of London’s most intriguing historical figures. Dee was a renaissance man; an occultist, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and navigator. In addition to his prodigious skills, Dee was a confidant of Queen Elizabeth I, who guided the nation through one of its most challenging eras, partly based upon Dee’s unique blend of alchemy, divination and Hermetic philosophy. The Quest for the Divine Language

Llewellyn Worldwide: From the very advent of the spoken word among humanity, language has been considered something sacred and magickal. To be able to share ideas between people was a powerful innovation, as was the ability to name and train our work animals, such as hunting and herding dogs. To know the true name of a person also granted some power over them: you might warn them away from danger or lure them into an ambush at your own will. As our legal systems became more sophisticated over time, the true name of a person (especially in the form of a signature) became a very powerful political tool—and it remains such to this day. Right from the start, language extended to (or we might say from) the spiritual realm. Some of our earliest words, and the hieroglyphs that represented them in writing, were received by shamans communing with their Patron Gods via ecstatic trance. What is Enochian Magick?

Dangers of Enochian Magick

The real danger with Enochian Magick is not that a monster will jump out at you. The real danger is that the practice of Enochian magick—treading the path of the Great Work—will by its very nature precipitate much of your stored karma. Past karmic debts, known collectively as one’s "karmic burden," can naturally be worked off over many future lifetimes. When the Great Work is attempted, one of the results is the dissipation of one’s karmic burden. In effect, the karma that would normally take lifetimes to work out is worked out in this lifetime. Obviously this situation is not limited to Enochian Magick, but is true for all paths of the Great Work. There are several safeguards a magician can use to reduce the dangers involved in the practice of Enochian Magick. The most obvious is to obtain knowledge. Know what you are doing and why you are doing it. Ignorant behavior, even when one’s motives are pure, usually ends in disaster. Another is to cultivate a sincere love for your fellow human beings—a true desire to help others. Compassion is a necessity for work in the higher Aethyrs, and without it you will be in very great danger indeed. Morality aside, it turns out that strong feelings of compassion and selfless love coat the aura with a protective shield that few demons can penetrate. John Dee and Edward Kelley’s Great Table

Dr. John Dee’s spirit diaries, and the “Enochian” language and magickal system derived from them, present one of the great enigmas of the western mystery tradition. In contemporary magickal practice, the most commonly encountered parts of the Enochian system beyond the language itself are the so-called “Enochian Tablets,” also known as the “elemental” tablets or Watchtowers. Originally received as parts of a singular grid or map called the Great Table, the Four Watchtowers were joined by a Black Cross; from this cross are derived the names of the more commonly used “Tablet of Union.” This Great Table was the last component of a system and language delivered to Dee and Kelley over many years, and clearly dependent upon the components that had come before it. Yet today the Enochian Tablets and Tablet of Union are often used without any of the other components Dee was told were necessary.

One of the most documented uses has been in the materials of the Golden Dawn. Israel Regardie himself advised Golden Dawn students to be very careful with how they used Enochian : “It is a very powerful system, and if used carelessly and indiscriminately will bring about disaster and spiritual disintegration.”[1] Why does he think this will happen? From observation and experience, likely, though in terms of actual mechanics we can infer he did not know the mechanism.

That of course leaves the unanswered questions of why the Great Table has been turned into four Enochian Tablets and a Tablet of Union, and why they are used in Golden Dawn rituals anyway. (The reason often given is because they were in the cipher manuscript from which Mathers derived the initiations, but that really is a dodge rather than an answer.) Aleister Crowley’s Vision and the Voice recounted experiments scrying the aethyrs with Victor Neuberg and left more readers shocked than instructed; his more analytic Liber Chanokh is often ignored because of lack of sensationalism. Enochian Magick - Introduction

There is a being variously known as God, the Tao, etc. from whom our inmost spirits were formed and of whom we, or most of us, are still a part. God is only a part of the Earth's creative scheme and is very much junior to the spirit enlivening the planet, to whom I will refer as the Worldspirit, and She is in turn junior to the spirit enlivening the Sun. Somehow, perhaps as described in the Book of Seniors, the Worldspirit has come to be encased in the core of the planet behind a double barrier, with only a few cracks to let Her influence out. The Babalon mentioned in the calls is the bodily intelligence which has remained in Her place. Also, there is a veil over the Earth, coincident with the aethers, which limits the influence coming from the Sun as well as the other planets of the solar system and extrasolar forces. This veil is rapidly burning away.

As a result of human beings' physical incarnations, we have developed in ways fitting with our place in Babalon's realm. As contact increases with the Worldsoul, Sun, and extrastellar forces, people will develop in directions relating to these as well. The religions of the Age of Pisces have emphasied dissolving into God (or Tao or emptiness) and exhibited a disdain for the nature of the world, categorized as a realm of sorrows where one inevitably gets crucified and so on. The Age of Aquarius can be expected to bring a greater emphasis on choice as to spiritual direction. Curiously, Ben talks about large numbers of human spirits going off to other star systems or universes, yet he ducks the fact that God is not out there where they'll be going, and sticks with the Piscean notion as to the point of initiation.

The Enochian magick material, in contrast to systems that have been known longer such as Kaballah, is not designed for the purpose of bringing people to the realization of God. The Enochian angels are primarily creative beings, not devotional/teaching ones, and they seem to be members of the broader Earth scheme who answer to God as well as others, as opposed to direct minions of God such as Kabbalistic angels are. Between these, the I Ged spirits, the other beings mentioned in the calls, and the various forces that all of these can bring one in contact with, one has a great deal of choice as to the direction one will go. Of course, the flip side of choice is responsibility. One needs to be clear on the direction one is bringing to Enochian workings and to get to know the various beings before deciding which ones one wishes to become attuned to, if any. An important example of this point is the business of climbing the aethers. The aethers are the avenue through which influence from outside the planet are able to enter, and so climbing the aethers will tend to bring one into tune with the will coming from the Sun rather than that coming from God.

The Enochian Magick Calls
The original set of calls given to Dee and Kelley were described as opening 49 gates and connected tablets. These tablets would seem to be those given in Liber Loagaeth, though the details are not clear yet. The calls open gates through which energy is transmitted and invoke the things mentioned in the calls including the I Ged spirits. The beings invoked do not seem to be intrinsically connected with the gates, as the connected tablets are. Rather, they seem to represent one way of employing the energy. The calls have a 7-fold pattern that seems to derive from the gates. This does not fit neatly with the structures found through the calls, in particular that of the aethers. It can be described roughly as follows: 0: These calls (0,7,14,etc.) seem to have a sense of reaching a sense of unity to complete the preceding calls and then returning to form to begin the next set. 1-3: These relate to some barrier to be reached through, with the first being outside projecting in, the second inside obeying the first, and the third giving a passage through connecting these two. 4: These have a quality of brightness and peace that make receptivity possible. They connect to the Worldsoul who lives at the center of the Earth. 5: These have an extraterrestrial connection admitted by means of the preceding. 6: These have a quality of earthly manifestation of higher plans. Enochian magic is the system of theurgy, or angel magic, communicated to the Elizabethan mathematician, geographer, astrologer and magician, Dr. John Dee (1527-1608) through the medium of his crystal scryer, the alchemist and necromancer Edward Kelley (1555-1595) by a hierarchy of spiritual intelligences who identified themselves as the same angels that had instructed the biblical patriarch Enoch in the occult wisdom of heaven.

Enoch is the fabled author of a number of mystical and magical texts that deal largely with the fallen angels of God, known collectively as the Watchers, whose task it was to watch over humanity from the four Watchtowers at the corners of creation. These Watchers observed that human women were beautiful and lusted after them. A group of Watchers, led by an angel known by a variety of names, among them Azazel, descended to the earth and adopted material forms so that they could dwell with mortal women. Their consorts bore them sons and daughters who were half-human and half-angelic.

The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.... There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (Genesis 6:2,4)

What the Bible neglects to say is that in return for the pleasure of their company, these fallen Watchers taught the women they loved, along with their half-breed descendants, the beginnings of all the arts and sciences that have so transformed the world in the modern age. They also taught enchantments, spells, the making of talismans and amulets, bewitchments, fascinations, glamours, the knowledge of the occult use of herbs and stones, astrology, and other esoteric arts. The use of cosmetics by women is ascribed to the teachings of the Watchers, who presumably wished their consorts to be more alluring.

More destructively, the Watchers taught their descendants the arts of warfare in order that they could rules as kings over all the lands of the earth. The mighty sons of the Watchers fell into contention with each other, and chaos reigned. The sons of the fallen angels, of which the first generation were known as giants because of their great wisdom and power, were regarded as devils by ordinary human beings. From the union of the daughters of the Watchers with those same Watchers, mortal men and women of great power and intelligence were born; from the union of the sons of the Watchers with those same Watchers (who are both male and female, being angels) spiritual creatures of male and female appearance possessing the power to rule over the earthly elements came forth.

The rule in magic is that from the sexual union between a spirit and a man, a spiritual creature with human qualities is born out of the womb of the spirit; but from the sexual union between a spirit and a woman, a human child with spiritual qualities is born out of the womb of the woman. Merlin falls into the second category -- he was the product of a union between a mortal woman and a spirit. As a practical matter, the offspring between an angel and a mortal woman must have a physical matrix or basis to inhabit before it can fully become flesh -- it must possess an embryo within its mother that was conceived in the usual way with a mortal man.

In this passage quoted from the Book of Enoch, the author explains these matters, though not so clearly as I have done, to his readers by having God speak to the fallen Watchers:

"But you were formerly spiritual, living the eternal life, and immortal for all generations of the world. And therefore I have not appointed wives for you; for as for the spiritual ones of the heaven, in heaven is their dwelling. And now, the giants, who are produced from the spirits and flesh, shall be called evil spirits upon the earth, and on the earth shall be their dwelling. Evil spirits have proceeded from their bodies; because they are born from men and from the holy Watchers is their beginning and primal origin; they shall be evil spirits upon earth, and evil spirits shall they be called. And the spirits of the giants afflict, oppress, destroy, attack, do battle, and work destruction on the earth, and cause trouble: they take no food, but nevertheless hunger and thirst, and cause offenses. And these spirits shall rise up against the children of men and against the women, because they have proceeded from them. From the days of the slaughter and destruction and death of the giants, from the souls of whose flesh the spirits, having gone forth, shall destroy without incurring judgement -- thus shall they destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgement in which the age shall be consummated, over the Watchers and the godless, yea, shall be wholly consummated."

The biblical Flood was caused to cover the earth by God in order to cleanse it of the tragic creations of humanity, who used the occult arts taught by the Watchers to bring about chaos and destruction. However, Noah and his family survived, the animals and plants survived, and so did a number of the spiritual children of the children of the Watchers.

The Enochian angels informed John Dee that they intended to instruct him in the same magic they had taught to Enoch after his living ascent into heaven. This was similar to the original angel magic taught by the Watchers to the daughters of men and their children. However, the angels informed Dee that their magic was pure, whereas the magic taught by the Watchers had been tainted black magic.

Enochian Chess

The major difference between Enochian Chess and the modern game is that in the former, when using it for divinatory purposes, the moves are decided by the throwing of a dice. Depending upon the number disclosed by the dice, so must a certain piece be moved, for the numbers are attributed to pieces. The actual details of the move--that is whether to right or left, backward or forward, to take an opponent or to press forward--are quite obviously left to the personal ingenium and divining mind of the player. The dice only determines specifically that such and such a piece shall be played.

The Prime Mover, or the owner of the Ptah piece, plays first, and his first move is to be decided by the throw of a dice to indicate which piece or pawn he must first play. Each player follows in rotation, deosil, that is round the board with the sun from the prime player. First the prime player moves, and if his setting is Air, the follow the Water pieces, the Fire pieces, the Earth pieces, and then back again to the Air who is the prime mover.

For the purposes of Divination, an additional piece was employed. This was called the Ptah. Any book dealing with the Egyptian God-forms will describe the form in question. A small figure of this should be made, and on the board it will represent the question or matter of divination. The mode of employing it is simple. It has no power at all, and is not actually used in the play. It is only used by the first player to be set on any square in the Lesser Angle from which he begins his play. Any square, that is, except the one on which the King first stands. The King must reach, in the course of the game, this square on which the Ptah is set and remain there for one round of the game undisturbed--that is without moving therefrom--and unchecked. A knowledge of the nature of the Pyramids with their elemental composition, and some knowledge of the Angelic forces represented by those squares and Pyramids, will decide the player as to what square shall be selected for the placing of the Ptah.

If the divinatory question concerns the fiery Lesser Angle of the Element of Earth, a question involving Capricornus and the figure Carcer ruled by Zazel, then the Ptah probably should be placed upon a square of the Angle which is the nature of Cardinal Earth, as representing the Yod type of Earth, or on Elemental Fire, that is the Heh (final) type of Fire.

John Dee

John Dee (July 13, 1527 - 1608 or 1609) was a noted British mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, occultist, and consultant to Queen Elizabeth I. He also devoted much of his life to alchemy, divination, and Hermetic philosophy.

Dee straddled the worlds of science and magic just as they were becoming distinguishable. One of the most learned men of his time, he had lectured to crowded halls at the University of Paris when still in his early twenties. He was an ardent promoter of mathematics, a respected astronomer and a leading expert in navigation, having trained many of those who would conduct England's voyages of discovery.

(He coined the term "British Empire.") At the same time, he immersed himself deeply in Judeo-Christian magic and Hermetic philosophy, devoting the last third of his life almost exclusively to these pursuits. For Dee, as with many of his contemporaries, these activities were not contradictory, but particular aspects of a consistent world-view.

Dee was born in Tower Ward, London to a Welsh family, whose surname derived from the Welsh du ("black"). His father Roland was a mercer and minor courtier. Dee attended the Chelmsford Chantry School (now King Edward VI Grammar School (Chelmsford), then - from 1543 to 1546 - St. John's College, Cambridge. His great abilities were recognized, and he was made a founding fellow of Trinity College.

In the late 1540s and early 1550s, he travelled in Europe, studying at Leuven and Brussels and lecturing in Paris on Euclid. He studied with Gemma Frisius and became a close friend of the cartographer Gerardus Mercator, returning to England with an important collection of mathematical and astronomical instruments. In 1552, he met Gerolamo Cardano in London: during their acquaintance they investigated a perpetual motion machine as well as a gem purported to have magical properties.

Dee was an intensely pious Christian, but his Christianity was deeply influenced by the Hermetic and Platonic-Pythagorean doctrines that were pervasive in the Renaissance. He believed that number was the basis of all things and the key to knowledge, that God's creation was an act of "numbering". From Hermeticism, he drew the belief that man had the potential for divine power, and he believed this divine power could be exercised through mathematics. His cabalistic angel magic (which was heavily numerological) and his work on practical mathematics (navigation, for example) were simply the exalted and mundane ends of the same spectrum, not the antithetical activities many would see them as today. His ultimate goal was to help bring forth a unified world religion through the healing of the breach of the Catholic and Protestant churches and the recapture of the pure theology of the ancients. Magic Squares

Magic squares are also the source of the sigils used to invoke various angelic Powers in Ceremonial Magic. The squares were not primarily numeric in nature when they originated: the Hebrew alephbeth, which was used to fill in the various spaces, is both numerical and alphabetic. As numbers in the squares add up no matter which way one counts them, so do the letters that represented them in Hebrew form the same words no matter how they are read. To invoke the Power one wishes, one draws the appropriate Magic square, then "connects the dots (letters)" on that square to spell the name of the Power.

The squares are used in talismanic magic. The squares can be inscribed on jewellry, clothing, parchment, virtually anything. They can be carried with you, or placed on an altar while doing spellwork. If I'm doing something specific, and want a certain planetary influence, I will draw that planets square on parchment, and place it under the candle, or on the altar, etc.

The Round Table of Nalvage

“All things are in order. Thus saith the Messenger of him which is the God of Wisdom. Is your worthiness such, as you can merit so great a mercy? Or are your vessels cleansed, and made apt to receive and hold the sweet liquor, pure understanding itself?”

“I am therefore to instruct and inform you, according to your Doctrine delivered, which is contained in 49 Tables. In 49 voices, or callings: Which are the Natural Keys, to open those, not 49. but 48. (for One is not to be opened) Gates of Understanding, whereby you shall have knowledge to move every Gate, and to call out as many as you please, or shall be thought necessary, which can very well, righteously, and wisely, open unto you the secrets of their Cities, & make you understand perfectly the6 contained in the Tables. Through which knowledge you shall easily be able to judge, not as the world doth, but perfectly of the world, and of all things contained within the compass of Nature, and of all things which are subject to an end.”

The Table itself consists of 4: 3 X 3 tablets named Continents. The Continents are ordered from the upper left to the lower left to the upper right and ending with the lower right. So that the concourse of the forces through the inner square of the Table progresses in a path that would form an inverted capital letter ‘N.’

The 1st and 2nd Continents are said to be dignified. The 3rd not yet dignified, but to be dignified. And the 4th is described as being without glory or dignification. The Latin appellations assigned to each repeat and emphasize the same sentiments. The upper left quadrant is called the “Vita Suprema,” ‘ the highest life.’ The lower left is simply “Vita,” ‘the life.’ The upper right is described as “Vita non dignificata, sed dignificanda,” that is ‘the life not dignified, but which shall be dignified.’ And of the lower right it is said, “Vita est etiam haec, sed quae peperit mors” meaning ‘Even this is life, but life which will be payed with death.’

When combined the 4 Continents form an inner tablet of 36 squares Attached to the sides of this inner tablet are 4 linear segments of 4 squares each, centered on the 4 sides of the inner tablet. Making the total number of squares in the Table 52.

The Substance is attributed to God the Father. The first circular mover, the circumference, God the Son, The finger of the Father, and mover of all things.The order and knitting together of the parts in their due and perfect proportion, God the Holy Ghost. Lo the beginning and end of all things.”

An Introduction to the Structure of Enochian Magick

The student of Enochian magick is initially faced with the often-bewildering complexity of its structure. Studying the published manuscript records of John Dee and Edward Kelly can be more confusing than helpful and often yields information that is at variance with the chief expositors of the system: the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley. The Golden Dawn system offers elegant solutions to many of Enochian magick’s seeming incongruities, but these often differ with instructions given by the Angels in Spirit Actions received by Dee and Kelly and sometimes with essential details in the delivered materials themselves. Later reconstructionists such as the Aurum Solis and Donald Tyson address some of these problems but leave many of them unsatisfactorily resolved. It is the purpose of this work to analyze this material and explain it in a useful and coherent manner for the use of both the student of the system and the practicing ceremonial magician.

For convenience’s sake, the entire system of Enochian magick can be divided into three meta-structures and these sets correlate to the three classic divisions of Hermetic Science and magick: Zodiacal, Planetary and Elemental. The distinctions between these structures
is necessarily not clear-cut, as each structure within the system is connected to other parts within its own subset and various significant parts are interconnected to parts within the other main meta-structures, interweaving the parts into a complex but harmonious
whole.

These three divisions are:

Zodiacal: The Aires or Aethyrs
Planetary: The Sigillum Dei Aemeth and Heptarchial systems
Elemental: The Watchtowers including the Round Table of Nalvage

Zodiacal System
The system of the 301 Aires2 includes a substructure of Governors3 and Parts of the Earth by which it is intimately tied to the Watchtower structure, and these in turn are correlated to the 12 Tribes of Israel and a system of angelic governance, peculiar to Enochian magick. This twelve-fold angelic rulership is the key by which the astrological associations are related to the parts of this aethyric system. The Keys of Calls form the introduction and a part of this structure but also provide a further intersection with the Watchtower hierarchies that are, metaphysically speaking, below and within the Aires in the overall cosmological geometry of Enochian magick.

Planetary System
The Sigillum Dei Aemeth and the various heptarchial elaborations form an extremely complex system of planetary and sevenfold magikal structures. This is the earliest received portion of the entire system. It is related not only to the science of alchemy and the traditional seven-fold systems of Hermetic Science but to the various complexes of sevens that permeate biblical symbolism, from the seven days of creation in Genesis to the multiplex seven-fold combinations of Revelation. The mythos of these paradigms is combined with its own unique imagery and Britannical historiography4 to explicate its often nearly impenetrable mysteries. Each of its parts has its own talismanic geometry and cryptographic liturgy. These discrete artifacts delineate each part but as above they are interrelated: within themselves, with other parts of this subsystem and not only to the other meta-systems of Enochian magick but to identifiable structures without it, including works published by Dee in his own lifetime, Qabala, Biblical symbolism, Hermetic science and magick (such as Agrippa5 , Bruno6 , Trithemius7 , Abano8 , Ptolemy9 etc.), Alchemy, Astrology, Astronomy etc. The various parts that are inclusive of the whole within this heptarchial structure are:

The Sigillum Dei Aemeth
The Holy Table, containing the 7 Tablets of Creation, and connecting The Mystical Heptarchy & The 49 Good Angels with The Lamen.
The Book of Enoch

Elemental System
The Watchtower structure is probably the most familiar part of Enochian magick. It has been popularized by the Golden Dawn and its descendants. In fact much of the material presented in the initial degrees of these orders, such as the Lesser Pentagram and Hexagram

Rituals, are designed to prepare the student for working with the ultimate integration of the various symbols of Hermetic and Cabalistic magick that is the heart of the second order of the Golden Dawn. This integration and correlation of symbols is sometimes naturally derived from the angelic communications, sometimes based on the geometric indications in the Dee corpus and sometimes the wholly synthetic creation of the chiefs of the Golden Dawn. There are significant problems with much of this synthetic material13, including the correlation of the Keys to the divisions of the Watchtowers, the derivation of angelic hierarchies and the directional mechanics of the Watchtowers themselves.

The Watchtower structure begins with the Round Table of Nalvage and progresses to the construction of the Watchtowers themselves, where the Calls or Keys are both related and divergent. The Watchtowers are themselves complex magickal figures from which lengthy hierarchies of angels can be derived. It should also be noted that the hierarchies thereof are related not only to the symbolism of the biblical books of Revelation and Ezekiel but provide geometric means of associating and conjuring various complex combinations of elemental, sub-elemental, planetary and zodiacal forces.

The 48 Calls

The Calls are a series of invocations in an unknown language, which is called "Angelic" in Dee’s records. Angelic has the appearance of a true language, though the existing samples are insufficient to deduce a full grammar.

The language is similar to English in its positioning of subjects, verbs, and objects. It is unlike English in its lack of separate articles, possessives, and prepositions.

a general rule, the words of the language do not appear related to those of any known language, although there are occasional striking (if superficial) resemblances. E.g., Angelic "christeos", meaning "let there be" versus Greek "christos", Angelic "babalon" meaning "wicked" or "harlot" versus "Babylon".

Nineteen Calls were given to Dee and Kelly. The final Call has thirty variations, making the total of 48 Calls. The purpose of the Calls is sufficiently described by Nalvage:

"This self-same art is it, which is delivered unto you as an infallible doctrine, containing in it the waters which run through many Gates: even above the Gate of Innocency, wherein you are taught to find out the dignity and corruption of nature: also made partakers in the Secret Judgements of the Almighty to be made manifest, and to be put into execution.

"I am therefore to instruct and inform you, according to your doctrine delivered, which is contained in 49 Tables. In 49 voices, or callings: which are the Natural Keys to open those, not 49 but 48 (for One is not to be opened) Gates of Understanding; whereby you shall have knowledge to move every Gate, and to call out as many as you please, or shall be thought necessary, which can very well, righteously, and wisely open unto you the secrets of their Cities, and make you understand perfectly [that] contained in the Tables."

Colin Low has suggested that the above-mentioned Gates are connected with the "Gates of Understanding" found in some Yetziratic texts, and with the fifty Gates mentioned in Thelema’s Liber AL vel Legis.

It is certain that there is some sort of relationship between the Calls and the Elemental Tablets (described below), but the exact nature of the connection is a matter of speculation. The 19th Call, titled the "Call of the Aethyrs", is explicitly associated with the 30 Aethyrs of Liber Scientiae; its wording clearly makes it an invocation for the 91 "Parts of the Earth" in that book.

Following the quote above, the remaining Calls are assumed to connect with the hierarchies of the elemental Tablets, but their wording is too poetic and ambiguous for specific associations to be made with certainty. While confirming the correct sequence of these Calls, the angel Ilemese states that each Call has its proper Table, but does not state what these tables are.

Experiments by several magicians seem to establish that the First and Second Calls in some way define the poles within which the remaining Calls work. The First Call usually produces a generic manifestation of Spirit, a general pull towards higher levels. The record implies in a vague way that it is to be used when invoking the Elemental Kings and their ministers, the Seniors; possibly in combination with other Calls. The Second Call is stranger. It does not appear to define a "material" pole as such; rather, it defines a framework or overall form into which the powers of the system can be poured and contained.

The usual assumption by later magicians (not universally accepted) has been that the remaining Calls refer to the "Lesser Angles" within the Tablets. The Golden Dawn’s method of associating these Calls with the Tablets and Lesser Angles has become the accepted standard. Donald Tyson has recently come up with an alternative method that has received some attention.

An alternative view of the Calls states that they are parallel to, but separate from the Tablets. That is, they should be used by themselves, without the divine names from the Tablets. There is certainly evidence in the text of the Calls that they represent a continuing "story" of a creative process, beginning with God in the First Call, and ending with the establishment of God’s power "in the center of the Earth" in the Eighteenth Call.

Astral Projection and Skrying

The astral plane is a level of reality which is higher than the physical world, but is lower than the divine or spiritual world. It is a place that is in-between.

This realm is the invisible blueprint that lies behind all physical forms.

All things manifest in the astral world before they manifest in the physical world. That is why ceremonial magicians work most of their magic on the astral plane, in order to directly effect what happens on the physical plane.

The astral plane is the world of reflection, images, and dreams. It contains what is known as the Akashic Record or the Akashic Library. This is a part of the astral said to contain all the memories and experiences of humanity over the course of history—embedded within the plastic substance of the ether.

The astral plane is also the inner world of the human soul —an inner dimension.

By "skrying" the magician gazes into this invisible world for knowledge. By using "astral projection," the magician enters this world and interacts with angels, elementals, and other beings. When a magician interacts with the elements and spirits, what he or she is actually doing, is working with those parts or archetypes that exist as a part of his or her own mind or psychic make-up.

But there is a Hermetic axiom which states "As above, so Below." These archetypal spirits and beings exist within the mind of the magician, just as they exist on a larger scale within the mind of the divine creator of the universe. To see a change in one is to see a change in the other.

Astral work is a very important tool for learning how things operate in the non-physical worlds. With it, the magician learns to contact spiritual realms, examine their landscape, and bring back information. What we are talking about here is controlled astral visions—meaningful and intense experiences that are completely understandable. In these visions the skryer maintains complete control and all of his powers of choice, will-power, and judgment.

Through these experiences, the magician is able to reach the deepest levels of what Carl Jung called the collective unconscious or what Hermetic philosophers called Anima Mundi—the Soul of the World.

Skrying and astral projection in the Golden Dawn tradition can be described as a form of self-hypnosis that uses symbols in order to cause changes in consciousness. From these higher levels of consciousness, the magician often tries to see the underlying causes of things—to work at a problem from a higher angle or perspective—to get inside the machinery of the universe and see just what makes it tick.

For centuries, skrying was done utilizing crystals, magic mirrors, a bowl of water, or any other reflective surface. Images such as tarot cards were also used.
