Seeking The Ancestors

"A spiralling eagle attacked the raging thermals with authority
Higher and higher it flew; closer and closer to the edge of the sky
The cry of a wolf distant, coming in closer, the shaman lucky to sight the lone male
Close to the lake off his usual trail, the deer disturbed, running to safety
A warning rattle and the shaman escaped death by inches ....

His mind is silent now; he is high in the land of the elders
he has completed the summoning
and his mind is silent; his heartbeat slow
With ease he summons his strength and closes off himself to the physical world
finding his inner silence and walks through that crystal cave
Deep within into the realm of the dead seeking the ancestors
Needing a recent loss to come forward and reveal their true face
For a need has arisen, and uncertainty ....

He gazes deep into the fire later
The night is deeper, no moon breaks the darkness
No wind whips up the dust from the plateau
Then the whispers come on the air
Confirming he had come to the right place ...."
