Without warning the British government starts moving illegal migrants into Thetford; locals protest and get arrested

Protests have erupted in Thetford, a market town in Norfolk, England, after migrant men were placed in free housing without prior notice to the local residents.

The protests spanned several nights and resulted in property damage, clashes with police and the arrest of five people. The charges included public order offences and suspicion of racial hatred. 

The protests began on Tuesday after it was revealed that a property on a family estate near a primary school had been converted into a house of multiple occupancy (“HMO”) for illegal migrants. An HMO is a house occupied by at least three people who are not from the same family or household but share basic facilities.

This coincided with news that the British government intended to use a nearby military base to house 3,750 migrants. 

In response to the protests, the police escorted five hooded males out of the property. The police’s response was criticised as heavy-handed, while police officials rejected the characterisation, stating their response was necessary to maintain order. “There were some skirmishes, it was a spirited protest but I didn’t see any violence … We fully support their right to protest. The True Cost of Green Subsidies is Much Higher Than Politicians Admit

 Intermittent ‘renewable’ (solar and wind) electricity generation is a useful but niche technology, either for off-grid users or as a small portion of on-grid generation. However, British politicians have decreed its central role in an energy transition away from the sources of energy that fuelled our transformation from a remote outpost of Europe to a rich post-industrial economy. Since most renewable generation is highly capital-intensive as well as intermittent, this can only be achieved by taking vast sums of money from electricity consumers to build generation plants and a parallel electricity grid. Maintaining two grids – one reliable, the other not so reliable – is not only vastly expensive but it introduces the risk of major failures, as the near total-blackouts in Spain and Portugal in April 2025 and in Texas in February 2021 have illustrated.

The commitment to an energy transition has been supported, until recently, by most politicians from all the main political parties. However, as explained in other articles, notably by Frank and Prins, the political and bureaucratic elite has never attempted to assess whether the policies adopted were, in any sense, value for money. In this article we will examine the tangled web of subsidies for renewable generation and ask what we are getting from the huge sums involved.

Large scale subsidies for renewable generation were first introduced under the Renewables Obligation, which commenced in 2002. This required energy suppliers to source a minimum proportion of the electricity they supplied from accredited renewable generators whose output was awarded Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs). The original idea was that the value of ROCs would be market-driven with a cap (the ROC buyout price) to prevent excessive costs to consumers. After lobbying by renewable generators, the rules were changed to ensure that the buyout price is effectively a floor price with the consequence that the value of a ROC has more than doubled since 2002....<<<Read More>>>...

Marxism and Shia Islam have a core feature in common

 Marx’s theory of immiseration and Twelver Shia eschatology share a common structural feature: both teach that history moves forward only through a period of necessary, progressive worsening, after which a total redemptive inversion suddenly occurs. Everything else follows from that single shared manifesto.

“Redemptive inversion” is the common core. It means the existing order is not improved by degrees; it is completely reversed. Workers’ misery and Islam-defined injustice are inverted into their opposites; that is, Islam-defined perfect justice and workers’ liberation.

In Marxism, the accumulated suffering of the working class under capitalism is inverted into the classless society. In Twelver doctrine, the earth filled with Islam-defined oppression is inverted into the earth filled with Islam-defined justice by the Mahdi. In both systems, the night must first become extremely dark – violently dark – before the dawn can break.

Marx explains the mechanism of that prior darkening in economic terms. In ‘Capital’, he analyses the rising “organic composition of capital” – the growing ratio of constant capital (machines and technology) to variable capital (living labour). As this ratio increases, relatively fewer workers are required. An industrial reserve army of the unemployed expands. That reserve army then “disciplines the working class”: it holds down wages, weakens bargaining power and keeps workers insecure and fragmented.

The Death of ‘Silly Season’

 ‘Silly season’ is supposedly upon us. Traditionally, the parliamentary recess marked a brief lull in political news. Ministers retreated to their constituencies, MPs disappeared on holiday and newspapers, deprived of Westminster intrigue, filled their pages with escaped llamas, giant marrows, seagulls stealing chips on Scarborough seafront and other harmless absurdities. The absence of serious political news was taken as evidence that, for a few weeks at least, the machinery of government had slowed to a crawl. As a teenager, I remember wondering: “If the news stops when Parliament stops, perhaps less government would mean less news.”

Silly season no longer seems to arrive. Every summer now brings another existential crisis demanding constant commentary. Brexit negotiations gave way to Covid and lockdowns. Covid gave way to Ukraine. Ukraine gave way to inflation, leadership contests, small boats, riots and a seemingly endless succession of emergencies. The applause for Burnham scrapping Starmer’s digital ID arrived before anyone checked what survived it

The new UK Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, is in Downing Street, and he has spent twenty years telling you exactly what he wants to do to the internet. He won the Makerfield by-election on 18 June 2026. He then collected the backing of roughly 349 Labour MPs, more than 85 per cent of the parliamentary party. By the time he walked through the black door, the job had been settled for weeks.

His first big announcement was the one privacy campaigners had been hoping for. Starmer’s digital ID scheme for all adults is dead, scrapped before Burnham had finished unpacking, the money moved to the cost of living. The applause came quickly. Perhaps it should not have.

This is a read on a government barely a day old. On speech and privacy, the early signals point one way, and it is not the way that loosens the state’s grip. He is not about to tear up the settlement he inherits from Keir Starmer. The open question is how much further he carries it.

Of Course Heat Pump Use is Going to Be Rationed – What Did You Think a ‘Smart Meter’ was For?

 As the heatwave hysteria somewhat subsided, the Telegraph revealed that in the future, use of heat pumps might be rationed at times of energy shortages. 

The Guardian, meanwhile, reported that the Prime Minister’s replacement, Andy Burnham is considering proposals to “make heat pumps cheaper to run than boilers”. The occupier of Number 10 may have changed but a profound unreality is still driving the policy agenda.

The main problem afflicting the green agenda was always physics. The second was economics. And the third was democracy. Heat pumps capture this sequence of problems perfectly. Green technology attempts to convert diffuse, ambient energy into useful energy – heat, in the case of heat pumps. And it does this in place of using a dense energy resource such as gas. But the relative density of these energy sources means that the machine that collects ambient energy must be so much larger, plus its capacities do not fully overlap with what it purportedly replaces. 

Consequently, a heat pump is at least six times as expensive as a gas combi boiler, occupies a much larger part of a home, responds less effectively to a household’s needs and requires the making of substantial alterations to the home and the behaviour of the occupants in order to function as expected. For those many reasons, most people have rejected them. 

And for that reason, successive governments have said that homes will have heat pumps whether they’re wanted or not, because the superior product that they replace will be ‘phased out’....<<<Read More>>>...

How Long Will Burnham Last?

 Over the past decade our political system has chewed through and spat out Prime Ministers at a faster rate than Premier League football teams burn through managers. As Andy Burnham enters 10 Downing Street, why would we think there is any reason he will do much better – in terms of longevity – than his immediate predecessors? I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a bookmaker offering odds on Burnham being removed from office before the next election rather than at it.

As the Labour Party slowly coalesced around a consensus that Starmer simply had to go there was an oft repeated refrain of, ‘We have to get this right first time if we are going to do it, we only have one chance.’

The theory here seems to be that ditching a leader – however unpopular – and finding a fresh one is not the sort of thing that the electorate approve of. They have passed their judgement at the ballot box and are usually unimpressed when the powers-that-be decide to second guess that decision.

More generally, ditching an incumbent leader against their will gives the impression of chaos and instability. It gives such an impression precisely because chaos and instability are typically what have brought about the decision to make a change.

The circumstances around removing a Prime Minister are always different but can be broadly batched into three categories – they are based on aesthetics, ideology or health. The last two are easier to explain to the public than the first. Margaret Thatcher was removed for ideological reasons – she was unwilling to retreat on the hugely unpopular poll tax and was also pursuing a European policy that a large chunk of her party disapproved of. Andy Burnham was the ID card minister under Blair; now he wants to urgently ban under-16s from accessing online content

 From May 2005 to May 2006, Andy Burnham was a Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Home Office in Tony Blair’s government.

At that time, he pushed for digital IDs to be imposed on the population. On the campaign trail, he said that it was not the right time for Starmer to introduce digital IDs. Now, he’s saying that methods to ban under-16s need to be “urgently” put in place.

Any method used to ban under-16s from online content is the first step in imposing digital IDs.

Rupert Lowe: The Fabian Society is deliberately trying to wreck the UK

In a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Rupert Lowe MP said that the shadowy group known as the Fabian Society was deliberately trying to wreck the UK.

Miliband Willing to Approve North Sea Oil to Land Job as Chancellor

Ed Miliband wants to approve drilling in the North Sea to calm market jitters about his possible appointment as Chancellor and prove he is no Net Zero “zealot”.

The Energy Secretary has privately signalled his willingness to grant consent for drilling at the Jackdaw gas field but cannot publicly confirm the move until a consultation closes next month.

Jackdaw, off the coast of Aberdeen, is one of two licences in the North Sea currently held in legal limbo. The other site, Rosebank, would produce oil to be sold in a global market, but Jackdaw would be able to provide enough fuel to heat 1.4 million British homes this winter.

Miliband is keen to show the markets he would be willing to put Britain’s economic growth ahead of his Net Zero ambitions if he became Chancellor amid reports more wealthy people are planning to flee Britain if he moves into No. 11.

Andy Burnham, who is set to become Prime Minister next Monday, has already said he is “open minded” about North Sea drilling to help combat Britain’s cost-of-living crisis.

Burnham “Plans £38 Billion Tax Raid’

 Andy Burnham is to launch a £38 billion tax raid on the wealthy to fund a spending spree in office, analysis by Reform UK has found – taking Labour’s total tax increases to more than £100 billion a year. The Telegraph has the story.

A report into the Prime Minister-in-waiting’s pledges found Burnham would bring Labour’s total increase in taxation from around £66 billion to more than £100 billion a year.

This includes promises of a ‘care levy’ of up to 10% of the value of estates after death, reforming the rates of capital gains tax (CGT) and imposing National Insurance on landlords’ rental income.

Implementing a torrent of new taxes not mentioned in Labour’s 2024 manifesto will increase pressure on Burnham to call an early election. He is due to be elected unopposed as Labour leader and Prime Minister on Friday.

Robert Jenrick, Reform’s Economy Spokesman, said: “Andy Burnham has spent 20 years reaching for other people’s money – a death tax on family homes, a graduate tax on young people getting their first pay cheque, a £14 billion raid on savings and investment and new levies on everything from your parking space at work to your weekend away.

An Attack on All Our Rights

 Have you heard about the new piece of legislation, tabled by the Home Secretary, which is “opening the door to a gradual erosion of all our rights and freedoms”? I ask because I received an email this morning from the human rights charity Liberty alerting me to this danger. Apparently, Shabana Mahmood (that strangest and rarest of beasts – a competent Labour Minister) is plotting to put “people’s rights at risk to score political points” and “weaken the European Convention” by making it easier to deport people. And this will apparently constitute an “attack on all our rights”.

The attack in question is coming in the form of the Immigration and Asylum Bill 2026, which is due to have its second reading on July 13th. The bill does rather a lot, and bits of it are actually very welcome – it indicates that (my goodness) some thought has gone into what the Government is trying to do in respect of immigration policy. But that’s for another day. Today I want to focus in particular on Liberty’s remarks about the aspects of the bill which deal with Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), the so-called ‘right to family life’, and what this demonstrates about the, frankly, debased and rather silly way in which human rights advocates think (or, rather, don’t think) about the values they hold dear. Left-wing politicians’ disdain for patriotism and British culture is behind their war on national flags

 The display of national flags, such as the Union Jack and St George’s Cross, is being met with hostility from left-wing politicians, who claim it creates “fear and division” in local communities.

The true reason for the ban, Paul Embery says, is their disdain for patriotism and traditional British culture.

What is it about our national flag that brings out such hypocrisy in the metropolitan elites? Why do these people, who seem entirely relaxed about the display of virtually every other kind of flag, even politically contentious or divisive ones, exhibit such hostility towards the colours of their own nation?

In recent days, Oxfordshire County Council became the first local authority to successfully impose a legal ban on the placement of flags on lampposts, after activists from the ‘Raise the Colours’ campaign had festooned some streets with the Union Jack and St George’s Cross.

The council is run by – no surprises here – the Liberal Democrats. In the high court, where it was seeking an injunction against the activists, the council claimed that the display of flags from roadside infrastructure gave rise to serious safety concerns.

Andy Burnham Will “Control” Immigration the Same Way He “Controlled” Homelessness – By Increasing It

Whilst mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham ‘solved’ homelessness there: by increasing it. Once elected in 2017, he pledged to end all rough sleeping in the city by 2020 through a scheme called A Bed Every Night, or ABEN – if he’d called it A Bed Every Day, it could have been ABED, which is an actual relevant word. The plan had even more serious problems than its botched acronym, because, despite initial success, by the time Andy left office the number of rough sleepers across Greater Manchester had begun to rise precipitously, almost doubling between 2022 and 2026. At this rate, the problem will soon end up even worse than when Andy became mayor in the first place.

The flaw was that, once indigents nationwide heard of Manchester’s ABEN and its early triumphs, they actively hitched to the city using its world-famous yellow bus network to take advantage of it, flooding the place with more hobos than a cardboard-box factory. The end result was tent-cities full of druggies and refugees, with the previous central parkland beauty-spot of Piccadilly Gardens now rechristened ‘Crackadilly Gardens‘. An unnamed city council source told local news outlet the Mill that: “A lot are under the perception they’re going to get a council house if they come to Manchester, which they aren’t.” The Mill spoke to one unhappy camper named Mohamed, who moved to Manchester from Birmingham, for one reason only: “I want a home.” A free one. Because he thinks he was promised one by Andy Burnham. Who’s funding the campaign to push the ruinous net-zero agenda in the UK?

 A network of foundations, research groups and policy shops, often funded through foreign channels, is behind the push for net zero in the UK.

The Spectator calls this network the “Dark Green lobby.”

“[The Dark Green lobby] has been astonishingly successful in shaping policy, controlling debate and overruling elected governments in the courts. It has prevented the exploration of oil and gas in the North Sea, kept energy prices high and made us ever more dependent on Chinese technology,” the outlet said.

The Dark Green actor with the most influence is the Netherlands-based European Climate Foundation (“ECF”), which supports “700+ partner organisations” to “broaden political and public support for net zero.”

“The ECF hopes to ‘embed climate action in robust, future-proof frameworks that withstand political change’. In other words, sod the voters,” The Spectator said.
