Sea smoke rises from the ocean and rivers freeze over as temperatures around the world plummet

Arctic sea smoke drifts up from the ocean as a 88-foot galleon drifts majestically by.
The mystical scene occurred after temperatures plunged to minus-12 degree F in Rockland, Maine yesterday morning.

Sea smoke appears when very cold air passes over warmer water, causing a type of fog. It is just one of many beautiful images from around the world as the January weather takes a dramatic turn.

Commuters crossing Halifax harbor in Nova Scotia, Canada braved the elements as they viewed steam from the deck of a MetroTransit ferry yesterday.

Frigid temperatures and power outages on Canada's East Coast have closed some schools and weather service has issued wind chill warnings in all of the Atlantic provinces. (Source: Daily Mail)
