Canberra rings in the new year with the worst air pollution in the WORLD - but it's not affected by the bushfires

[Daily Mail Australia]: Australia's capital rang in the new decade while choking through the worst air pollution in the world.

Residents in and around Canberra woke on January 1 to thick smoke and haze 15 times greater than hazardous levels at 3589 in the Air Pollution Index on Wednesday morning.

Any reading over 200 is considered hazardous.

Meanwhile, fire-affected Batemans Bay, east of Canberra, recorded just 999.

Canberra's massive figure smashed the old record of 1420 which was recorded just two days before.

Fires continue to burn on the South Coast of New South Wales and authorities said the thick haze is expected to stick around for the remainder of Wednesday.

A number of Canberra residents took to social media to share their experiences.
