'Proteins called amyloid plaques which build up in the brain of dementia sufferers are thought to be linked to the onset of symptoms such as memory loss and mental impairment. Now scientists claim to have established a link between the production of the plaques and a separate process through which the brain converts sugar into energy, known as aerobic glycolysis.
