Tornadoes Claim Lives In Southern US

Tornadoes have killed at least 22 people and injured dozens more in the American states of Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky.

A couple and a child were killed after a tornado near the centre of Atkins, a community of 3,000 along the Arkansas River. Local media reports said there were seven deaths in Arkansas and four in Tennessee.

As voters went to the polls for Super Tuesday, at least one voting site in Atkins continued functioning as a Red Cross shelter after polls closed.

The power was knocked out briefly at a Little Rock convention hall that hosted a watch party for Republican Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor.

The tornadoes were part of a huge storm that swept across much of the country's midsection on Tuesday, dropping snow on its northern edge, thunderstorms elsewhere and threatening flooding in areas of the Midwest still recovering from a disastrously wet summer. (Sky News)
