Big Thaw Set To Follow Icy Start

A big thaw is expected to begin today after the heavy snowfall and gale force winds that have battered parts of Britain start to ease. (Sky News Saturday 2nd February 2008)

Blizzards hit the north of England and Scotland on Friday and 80mph winds led to chaos on the roads, bringing down trees and leaving thousands of homes without electricity.

Less biting weather is expected today although severe weather warnings have been issued for most of the UK, predicting icy roads early on.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings alerting people to the risk of icy roads in northern and eastern England as well as the south west of the country. Warning have also been issued in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and residents in parts of Scotland may wake up to more snow this morning.

Friday's cold snap saw snow recorded as deep as 15cm in some parts.
