Facebook users are being targeted by terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, according to a U.S. government report. Terror bosses are said to rely on the social network to swap information, recruit new members and spread radical propaganda. The study says users even share bomb recipes and lessons on how to use machine guns. The Facebook link was revealed in a Department of Homeland Security report issued last month called ‘Terrorist Use of Social Networking Sites: Facebook Case Study.’ Security analysts told Fox News – the US network that leaked the report – that terror groups have seized on the site as a way of radicalising people in the U.S. and other western countries it could never hope to reach any other way.‘Every person who connects to the Internet with a computer needs to take this issue seriously,’ said Steve Graham, senior director for EC Council, an American cybersecurity certification membership organisation. ‘Reports like this show we are figuratively sitting next to terrorists. So are our friends, our kids and anyone else who types www,’ he added. The site offers a gateway to extremist online forums and as a media outlet for propaganda, says the study. Informational videos titled Tactical Shooting, and Getting To Know Your AK-47 are reportedly included on the Facebook page for an extremist Islamic group with more than 2,000 members.
Although Facebook is not the only site being used by extremists, the Homeland Security Department claims it has been singled out as being particularly effective. This is because it has more than 500 million users and is much harder to track than web discussion forums.
