The volcanic ash cloud that brought chaos to Britain's skies, the WikiLeaks, and the alleged sex attacker behind them, Climategate and the Big Freeze
Daily Mail 31st December 2010: Terror plots, government secrets, espionage and natural disasters - 2010 has seen it all. It was the year that saw a Icelandic volcanic ash cloud cause travel chaos across the globe, grounding flights and leaving travellers stranded for days, much like the snow at Heathrow Airport. All over the globe the weather wreaked havoc - notably on the small island of Haiti which was brought to its knees after a severe earthquake struck followed by an outbreak of deadly cholera, and Pakistan where floods claimed the lives of thousands and left parts of the country submerged. But the disasters weren't all natural: in May an oil spill from a broken BP pipe produced a slick for miles along the Gulf of Mexico and cost the British chief executive his job. There were some uplifting events though. In October the world was gripped by the story of 33 Chilean miners trapped in the San Jose copper mine for 69 days. They emerged to discover they were global superstars. And of course the British Prime Minister and the leader of the opposition both became fathers.
