Sky Sources: Rupert Murdoch Steps Down

Sky News understands that Rupert Murdoch is stepping down as chairman of BSkyB. Sky sources say that Mr Murdoch's son, James, will become the non executive chairman of BSkyB. And the new chief executive officer of BSkyB will be Jeremy Darroch.

BSkyB added 83,000 net new subscribers in its first quarter from July 2007 and posted an 11% hike in revenues to £1.18bn.

Its figure for "churn" - customer turnover - was 11.3%, the lowest it has been for 15 months. Adjusted operating profit was £143m, down 21% on the £180m of 12 months ago, because of the broadcaster's heavy investment in programming and its broadband services.

James Murdoch said: "We have seen a strong start with continued growth in demand for our expanding range of products and services." (Sky News)
