Swinside Stone Circle

Swinside stone circle is a very well preserved circle in a beautiful tranquil setting and there are about 55 stones remaining. The tallest is almost 8ft (2.4 metres) and several are placed close together to form around a 90 foot ring. To the south east is an entrance with double stones which faces down the valley towards the midsummer sunrise.

The circle is also known as Sunkenkirk, after a legend that the Devil made the stones sink into the ground to prevent them being used to build a church's foundation.
