Earth’s life-support systems are failing, with seven of nine planetary boundaries now breached, scientists warn in a global assessment that says time to reverse course is running out.
The Planetary Health Check 2026, written by more than 60 international researchers, examined climate change, ocean acidification, stratospheric ozone, land-system change, biosphere integrity and other measures. Four sit in the high-risk red zone, three in the increasing-risk yellow zone, and only two remain in the safe green zone.
“The impact of transgressing planetary boundaries are becoming increasingly clear all around us,” the report says. “Results published in the last year show that climate change is progressing faster than previously expected, causing unprecedented heatwaves on land and in the ocean and fuelling destructive extreme weather events.”
It cites the worst mass bleaching of tropical coral reefs on record, a credible risk of a shutdown of the main Atlantic overturning circulation even under low- to medium-emission paths, and signs that major Antarctic ice masses may already be sliding into the sea.
“With seven out of nine boundaries transgressed, we have pushed Earth outside of its Safe Operating Space – meaning that we are turning Earth from a safe home into one full of hazards that threaten people across the world,” the authors write.
Red means severe, irreversible damage to key planetary functions is likely. Climate change is in that category, as is the flood of “novel entities”—plastics, synthetic chemicals, pesticides and other pollutants. Biochemical flows, the disruption of nature’s nutrient cycles, are also red. So is the biosphere: a large loss of species, ecosystems and the functions that sustain life.
Yellow covers freshwater systems, land use and ocean acidification. Only ozone-layer thinning and atmospheric aerosol loading remain green.
The Amazon is near a critical threshold. If it tips, “up to 70 per cent of the Amazon forest could transition from lush rainforest to dry tropical savanna,” writes lead author Professor Carlos Nobre of the University of São Paulo.
That would release hundreds of billions of tons of carbon dioxide, wipe out countless species and shake climate, food, water and health worldwide. “Besides an ecological catastrophe, losing the Amazon would be a moral injury: a sign that we had allowed one of Earth’s great living worlds to disappear under our care.”...<<<Read More>>>...
