Hummingbird Symbolism

The hummingbird symbolizes many different concepts. Because of its speed, the hummingbird is known as a messenger and stopper of time. It is also a symbol of love, joy, and beauty. The hummingbird is also able to fly backwards, teaching us that we can look back on our past. But, this bird also teaches that we must not dwell on our past; we need to move forward. When the hummingbird hovers over flowers while drinking nectar, we learn that we should savour each moment, and appreciate the things we love.

The hummingbird has powerful spiritual significance. In the Andes of South America the hummingbird is a symbol of resurrection. It seems to die on cold nights, but comes back to life again at sunrise.

Hummingbird is the creature that opens the heart. When the hurt that caused us to close our hearts gets a chance to heal, our hearts are free to open again.

With hummingbird consciousness, we learn the truth of beauty. Our life becomes a wonderland of delights in flowers, aromas and tastes. We laugh and enjoy creation, we appreciate the magic of the present moment, and the magic of being alive.

Hummingbird teaches us the medicinal properties of plants and how to work with the energy of flowers to heal ourselves and others. Hummingbirds teach us fierce independence. They teach us to fight in a way where no one gets hurt. They teach us courage. Having the courage to refrain from creating new trauma by communicating non-violently toward ourselves and others is an important part of healing. Recovering lost parts of ourselves enables us to become healthily independent.

It is not commonly known that the fluttering wings of the hummingbird move in the pattern of an infinity symbol - further solidifying their symbolism of eternity, continuity, and infinity.

By observing the Hummingbird, we see they are seemingly tireless. Always actively seeking the sweetest nectar, they remind us to forever seek out the good in life and the beauty in each day. Amazing migrators, some Hummingbirds are known to wing their way as far as 2000 miles to reach their destination. This quality reminds us to be persistent in the pursuit of our dreams, and adopt the tenacity of the Hummingbird in our lives.

  1. Thank you so much for this! I met a hummingbird on a walk this morning, I had never seen one sitting still or heard it chirp before. It kept chirping and I looked up and was surprised to see a hummingbird just sitting there on the tree branch. It stayed there for about five minutes just chirping away and then flew away, pretty amazing and I really appreciate your explanation. Thank you!

  2. Really informative post... thank you! I had a dream about a hummingbird a few months back, and I was trying to find the symbolism in order to better understand it's meaning. I had a feeling it had something to do with spirituality and "hovering". In the dream, it was "tangled up" in my hair with a bunch of other "stuff", and I was trying to free it, all the while worrying about it being "hurt". Finally, I managed to get it free, and it suddenly turned into a little hamster that kept jumping at me playfully. I guess the meaning is pretty obvious here.

  3. I have one or more hummingbird(s) that come to my balcony several times in the last couple of months. And I walked my dog yesterday morning and there was another one. Your explanation makes perfect sense and it is definitely true for me in terms of resurrection. And it is "a light in the darkness".

  4. This is amazing! I'm currently in a deep process of emotional healing and my days can get so very dark... Just this past week I've started exploring the spiritual journey...reading the Power of Now and A Course in Miracles. I've also prayed so very hard. About two hours ago, I discovered a hummingbird who won't leave my back porch even though I've had the screen door propped open! At one point, I was able to coax it into a paper cup, it just stayed there on the edge and let me feed it drops of pineapple juice from my finger (I did so thinking it might be ill...) Then it suddently regained its energy and is still flying around my porch. I'm so afraid it will die tonight - it's chilly here today!

  5. This is an incredibly meaningful explanation and I appreciate your explanation. I have been through a difficult time in my life over the past year or so. During this time I have been consistently. Insides by a hummingbird on my balcony. The hummingbird will even come so close to my face that I can almost touch it. One day I left my porch door open and realized he flew inside. I did everything in my ppower to free the hummingbird as he kept flying into the window to escape to the outside. I was able to free him with my neighbors help and even got a close up glimpse of him before we set him free. He continues to visit me on my balcony and I just know that he has come into my life to teach me many of the life lessons that you have outlined above. Thank you so much...

I never saw it just thought she was trying to make us feel better. But my mother been gone for about 6 months now and I was feeling low one day just forgot everything my mother taught me. Then as im walking I see something on the floor it jumps up and starts hovering infront of me. Then it ate from flowers beside me. It stayed so close I felt I could touch it. I took my work hat to see how close I could get to it and it sat on my hat walked around till it stood on my hand. It cherped. I recorded all this it even walked a block with me on my hat then when I said thanks mom it flew off.

  8. Thank you for this explanation. I have been going through a very difficult and emotionally draining time. There is a Humming bird that flies right next to my ear. I never see it coming but it's wing beats are so loud in my ear. I turn to look at him and he hovers right in front of my face for a moment just hovering there then he flies off. This has happened to me several times. I feel lucky:)

  11. Yesterday I saw a baby hummingbird for the first time. It was such a beautiful and moving sight. It was feeding from our pink Bee Balm flowers. Does anyone know if there's a speciaal meaning to being visited by a baby hummingbird?

My Mom was burned in a fire on 5/2/12. She was in hospital for a month. The morning she was dying, I was sitting outside the hospital and a hummingbird came right in front of me, flapping its wings, chattering loudly. I ignored it, but it would not leave. I then realized , as if telepathically, it was trying to tell me that this was the way my Mom would be in spirit. Free, energetic, full of life. I could feel it communicating to me. My Mom died 2 hours later. I was amazed when I looked up the symbolism for the hummingbird. It really meant a lot and I have the utmost respect for these spiritual creatures.

    1. Exactly the same happened to me on Friday 13th of July, when my father died. I was onboard (on a cruise in Venice), I didn`t know yet he died only half an hour before. I only knew he was in a bad condition after very long illness. Thank you Maria for explanation. Obviously your mum and my dad had the same spirit and the same message to us. They both wanted to tell us they dont suffer any more.

    2. According to many cultures the spirit takes form of a bird when death come, so come to their relatives to remember them It is in the nature, It had become Nature itself, and try to bring peace to their hearts...

    3. Beautiful symbolism! I too saw a hummingbird the morning of my mother's funeral 3.5yrs ago (she passed away suddenly & I never got to say goodbye) and when it took flight past me on the way to the church, my heart soared! Ever since, and everytime I see a hummingbird I feel infinite peace that Mom's okay and we'll see each other again.

  15. I was going thru the most difficult time in my life. One morning I was sitting on my porch and thinking over my situation. I was very sad and didn't know the next step to take in my life. Suddenly a hummingbird was hovering in front of my face then it flew toward my hand and tapped my fingertip 3 times with it's beak. It gave me such a feeling of peace, and I hadn't had any peace in my life for many months. It seemed like a sign to me that the troubles I was facing would pass and that there is still beauty and hope in the world. Everyday we should be aware of the small little signs god sends to us thru animals, nature, and the people that cross our paths.

  16. My sister passed away, after fighting cancer for about a year... when I went back to my routine life of working, it was very difficult. Almost every morning, and maybe several times a day I would see a humming bird. The wiered thing was that I would see a humming bird at home and at work. Sometimes it would get very close to me and stay for a while. I decided to think it was my sister visiting me, and telling me its going to be okay. Now I'm thinking of getting a tatoo in her memory, and the humming bird stands out to me, especially the symbolism of the humming bird.

  17. This is so awesome! I lost a friend to cancer less than a week ago, and am going through a bit of my own health scare at the moment which is hopefully nothing. A hummingbird flew straight into my head this morning. After reading this, I feel more comforted. :)

  18. As I stepped out on my front porch this morning to greet the day, a hummingbird zipped passed my face. It quickly turned around and fluttered only for a second as if it was submitting a form of apology. As quickly as it zipped passed me, it flew away continuing it's daily chore of collecting nectar. I watched for a moment observing this beautiful creature and slowly stepped closer to take a picture of it. As i focused my camera, i glanced up only to see it looking at me. I did glanced back at my camera and before i could capture the picture, it zipped off! I've been going through alot emotionally and reading this post about the significance of the hummingbird lifted me because it's symbolic attributes are those i see in myself! ... I have a new FavoriteAnimal! THANKS FOR THIS!!

I love all animals! They are great teachers. Sometimes we should learn from them. To become better people ourselves. Nature is our professors of the world. We shouldn't fear them! I love mother nature because of the creations she makes. Never underestimate the animals they show more love then humans!

  20. When I was going through my divorce in 2004 I use to find beauty in feeding hummingbirds but this one morning, I walked away from the balcony where the hummingbird feeder was and went into my room in the opposite corner of the house. I heard noises at the window and there appeared a hummingbird it felt like it was greeting me in my window.

Then many times in my later in my life have i had hummingbirds fly real scary close to my face and stare at me then fly away.

  22. A hummingbird came to my back deck a few weeks ago when my mom was in ICU because she had complications from hip surgery. I was enthralled because I had never seen a hummingbird in CT and up so close. My mom was released from ICU and went to rehab but passed on 4 days later. Now I feel the significance of the hummingbird in my heart.

  23. My sister (Mary) used to see hummingbirds around the house all of the time. I, myself had rarely ever seen them. Mary had a heart condition that she was born with and passed away in August of 2010. After she passed, the family was sitting outside on the deck talking. My father had taken her passing very hard. While he was standing there talking with us a hummingbird flew up to him and hovered at his face seeming to make sure that eye contact was made and then flew away. My father was shocked because nothing like that had ever happened to him before (or since) that day.
I now see hummingbirds all the time. I know it is my sister saying hello. Seeing the hummingbirds brings such warmth and comfort to my soul.
Thanks for a very interesting article!

  26. "The Good In life"
I came to work today to find a humming bird sitting on my key board. I could not explain what this majestic bird was doing in my building, in my office, on my desk, and still alive. I captured it and held it for a while then released it outside. I shared this moment with a special person in my life and we talked about our experiences and realized how beautiful it is to be alive in this moment, sharing a memory with the one you love. “The good in life.”
We share the same feeling together and I will forever be connected to her in this moment.

  27. Wow, so interesting. I dreamt of a hummingbird last night and it was peculiar. The hummingbird came close to insert a diamond in my eye and one in my heart. I don't know the significance of that, but I was intrigued to read about the healing association and open heartedness. My friend and I have grown close again after years of hurt and separation. I look forward to seeing him again in this new year. Funny how this realization prompted me to dream of a hummingbird!

  28. Something unreal happened to me 2days ago, and it all started with a Hummingbird clear STENCIL! It's a little lengthy, but I just wanted to share..it involves my friend who passed away 5 yrs ago. **I have never had any type of connection or even seen a hummingbird in person in my life---no connection. Other thing: (my friend who I will talk about) only drank Corona--lol..friends would leave a corona bottle cap next to his grave..we would all drink one for him on any occasion involving him for him..he LOVED corona. Last, I have tattoos with my newest one one month ago which is "let it be" on the side of my left hand.--important in this!!**

I went to visit my friends grave as I do often & always do the same thing: sometimes get a couple of simple flowers, but i ALWAYS write a little note and each one at the end says "I love you I miss you..so much..tanti baci (many kisses in Italian)" (exact words for 2 years at the end of the short quick notes).
NO WIND TODAY AT ALL--and i just wanted to stay at the site longer than usual...then something pricks me..i turn around and this picture/stencil of a hummingbird was blown into me then fell next to me...literally..no actual bird but still.. I have no connection to hummingbirds or anything of that nature at all---ever! I picked it up & put it in my purse.
I then saw a large container 40ft. away..there was a collection of flowers (fake ones) blown away from the windy days last week in a LARGE box w/"lost flowers" on it--so I just wanted to see what they had--and just get a couple to put next to my note. My favorite are daisies so wanted those, and anytime I tried to move to get it..the stem of it would break off..only the daisies..and only 2 of over 100 flowers.and they were the only single ones.I stuck one daisy down by the tombstone, left my same type of note and decided to keep the other daisy (cheesy I know). I just wanted to sit there by his grave longer today and for some reason then left.
I stopped by a gas station..they had a large tub/cooler with soda's in it..but ice covered it so you could only see a couple (NON ALCOHOLIC ONLY IN THERE--its a rule there)..I just reached in and later saw I had grabbed a Corona mini bottle. The clerks questioned me thinking I put it in there...so it was weird..and I only drank corona with him..but he was "known" for it lol...and that caught my attention!!
So I posted on yahoo answers basically seeing if there was a symbolic meaning, a sign, coincidence?? My phone kept dying so I couldn't look it up--I didn't know what the hummingbird meant, but it kept sliding out of my purse at home and in the car..always by my right foot.
I put it on my shelf and was reading a response and after only half of it was through..my dog wagged his tail and knocked the Hummingbird off the shelf..and on the floor AND at that exact moment "let it be" came on from my phone (i had it on pandora for hours...). Right at that MOMENT when it fell..and i was reading a response about this exact story..and I got that let it be tattoo to represent him (mainly) and some other friends who passed away..
After the song ended I began reading the rest of the response...basically telling me the same message as the song and more about the symbolism of the Hummingbird spirit meaning & how it's similar to daisies in a way..

And it all started with that Hummingbird Stencil..that kept making sure i saw it and did not put it away...all that happened within 2 hours..2 days ago. I looked into it more and it is still unreal how much meaning it has that relates to this..

  30. I am going through a massive healing right now after experiencing a separation/divorce from my husband of almost 20 years who just last week broke it off with his girlfriend he had been in an extra marital relationship for a year. My son and I came home yesterday after work and school and found a nearly dead hummingbird on our doorstep. My son carefully placed the bird in the nearby garden. We said prayers and shed tears. Can anyone help me figure out what this could mean to come home and find a nearly dead hummingbird right on your doorstep? Any interpretations and/or explanations are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  31. I have lived in Venezuela for 29 years, my mother was in Canada suffering from Alzheimers (14 years)We visited her twice a year. Last Dec. a hummingbird flew into my home. A few days later I received a phone call that my mom had stopped drinking fluids and was in a bad situation. We flew up to spend our usual Christmas with her, she lasted 2 weeks without any fluids or food. First, I believe she waited for us to come and spend Chrismas with her and I also believe the hummerbird was her spirit, telling me everything is ok, move forward, don`t dwell in the past. enjoy life, savour every minute.

  32. Today we put moms ashes in the rose garden of her church. She had died Oct.28 2012 we all kind of wished we didn't have to relive the sadness of her passing as her memorial was attended by 300 of those who loved her dearly 5 mo.ago here at her church. Today was only her immediate family as the minister began to speak a humming bird flew above us stopping at the eve of the building next to us and them came down and hovered her daughter and son in-law where she lived when she died and them flew around us all and left. This prompted us to seek the symbol of the Humming Bird. After finding your web site we realized the memorial was in celebration of her life and today was her reminding us of how all these things like the humming bird she gave to us in life. Thank you Stevies Family

  35. Very interesting, thank you. I found your page after I had a hummingbird dream last night. I dreamed of an iridescent pink and gold hummingbird fluttering about my hair and heart. The strange thing is, that it also had a crown, like a peacock, and also a fanned tail, like a peacock. I've been exploring therapeutic grade essential oils lately, so maybe the flowers/herbs/plants are calling to me as they call the hummingbird. Also, I just remembered, isn't pink associated with the heart chakra and gold with the crown chakra? What a powerful dream. —Gaile

  36. I was hummed yesterday and was wondering the significance of it. A male Hummingbird was feeding at a feeder about 4 yards away . I was sitting on a porch at a friends house. The bird then flew through the railings of the porch and right up to my face, about 1 foot directly in front of me. He stayed there watching me for about 30 seconds and then flew off. It took my breath away. All that you have written about what is significant is actually happening in my life right now. I'm not sure why this bird was so compelled to interact with me in this way. Maybe natures affirmation that I am doing the right thing and making the right choices. Thank you for helping to shed light on this amazing experience I had. - Amy
