Michael Owen scores the winner on United debut

Michael Owen marked his Manchester United debut with the winning goal as Sir Alex Ferguson’s side made a victorious start to their pre-season tour.

Owen, on as a 60th-minute substitute, rescued United with five minutes left after a howler from keeper Ben Foster allowed their opponents to level. England striker Owen, wearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s old No.7 shirt in United’s first game since their former star player’s £80m move to Real Madrid, looked lively in his impressive cameo performance.

Having come close to scoring after linking up well with Dimitar Berbatov and miscuing a shot across the face of goal, Owen struck in the 85th minute.
