A sudden curious thought, then,
‘These scholars are not even aware they are dead’
They see me there before them
Rushing past in the wake of the messenger
who leads me wordlessly to the room at the end
and the waiting elder
Like I am a former pupil called back ....
I watch the door open wide
the scholars forgotten
as I see a void of blinding white light appear before me
A mighty horse is rearing and coming towards me across the threshold
there is a rider, a warrior carrying a broadsword
and on its face there is a grimace, the sword too heavy to bear ...
