How Do You Know?

In truth, there is no way for us to know what is real. We believe we are human beings experiencing life here on Earth, but in reality we could be imagining this entire experience. We could be hooked up to machines and dreaming this entire existence. We could be a bunch of video game characters on God’s computer, or characters in a holodeck on a starship. We just don’t know. We can’t know. And any information we gather could just be part of the simulation or hallucination. Given that we can’t really know what’s real, what are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to behave? How are we supposed to go on if we don’t really know what’s real? How are we supposed to trust any information our brains give us when all that information could be programmed at the whimsy of a machine, an alien, or a higher consciousness? The answer is that we can’t know.
