In Sydney yesterday it appeared the environmental message was paying off. Many fans said they had attended the event because of concerns about climate change, not just because of the big-name bands on offer. Headline acts at the Sydney show included Crowded House, Wolfmother, Missy Higgins and Sneaky Sound System. (Sydney Morning Herald)

Sydney's giant, jolly green gig
It was a giant greenie gig that began in Sydney and then stretched across the world. Nearly 45,000 fans packed Aussie Stadium in Moore Park yesterday for Live Earth, a concert raising awareness about climate change. Millions more watched the performances on television across the world as part of events being staged in Sydney and Tokyo yesterday, then overnight in Johannesburg, London, New York and Rio de Janeiro. A band in Antarctica also performed to a handful of scientists, so concerts were staged on every continent.
