Magic journeying can either be an inner journey, or an actual outward journey towards a physical objective. The inner journey, or pathworking, involves travelling through inner landscapes, visualising the land and the events which one encounters there.
The inner journey is undertaken as part of a meditative state, either generated personally or externally as a 'pathworking' in response to another person describing the stages of the journey during the meditation.
The outer journey is similar, except it involves actual physical movement. The sacred pilgrimage is the classic example of this type of travelling; which comprises travelling along a prescribed route, taking sacred paths and visiting holy places along the way. The prospective wayfarer must first come into the proper frame of mind, and spiritual condition before commencing the journey. Once in this state, he or she will experience the unseen, spiritual side of the landscape, coming into contact with otherworld presences.
Outer journeys need not be the equivalent of a religious pilgrimage, however. They can be a spiritual exploration of a new area until the seeker finds a natural spiritual place in the landscape where she or he can have a rapport with the unseen.
