The largest passenger aircraft ever built has taken to the sky - finally. Today's inaugural flight of the Airbus A380 left Singapore at dawn for the historic nine-hour flight to Sydney. Prior to take-off, the passengers were all gathered in one area and served drinks and breakfast. There is great relief that the first commerical flight is at last up and running. As we took off from Singapore there was a loud cheer from the passengers, but it is an amazingly quiet aircraft - we could barely hear the engines.
The pride of the Singapore Airlines fleet sits eight storeys high and can carry 850 passengers, but there are half that number on the maiden flight. The wide bodied aircraft is huge. Weighing 361 tonnes, it is spacious enough to hold 10 squash courts, and 70 cars could park on each gulled wing. As Europe's biggest industrial project, the construction of the Airbus A380 suffered two years of delays. (Sky News)
