Shuttle blasts off

The Space Shuttle Atlantis has successfully blasted off from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida for a mission to the orbiting International Space Station.

The seven astronauts on board will make an 11-day trip to the ISS, where they plan to install a new segment and solar panels on the orbital research outpost.

The new panels form part of efforts to double power at the station by 2010, when its construction is due for completion.

The flight is the first of four shuttle missions this year.
