Britain braced for the big freeze with temperatures set to drop to -9 overnight

Britain's yo-yo weather will bite with a vengeance this weekend as the "big freeze" closes in, causing temperatures to plummet to -9C. (Daily Mail Sunday 17th February 2008)

Temperatures in some areas are due to drop this evening and the whole country will experience extremely cold weather overnight.

Sunday night will also be bitterly cold as the mercury is expected to stay well below freezing despite some sunshine during the day.

Experts predict this month could end up being one of the coldest Februaries in 10 years despite the mild few days enjoyed by many earlier this week.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Although Friday night was cold, it's set to get worse on Saturday night as drier, colder air sweeps in. It will be as low as -9C along the Welsh borders and across the Pennines and well below freezing everywhere else. We are definitely feeling wintry temperatures at the moment, and despite a dry and sunny Sunday there won't be any let-up on Sunday night. There will be widespread cold. London should see -6C (21F) on Sunday night."

Temperatures in Yorkshire and Humberside dropped to 5C (23F) on Friday night and -4C (25F) across the whole of the East Midlands and in Bristol.
